I would browse the Cold Steel forum here. There's plenty of info on the Gurkha in general, and some dealing with the 0-1 version. I highly recommend the Gurkha, though my experience is with an SK-5 version.

If looking for Khukuri, i'd definitely recommend to go for genuine one, entirely handmade, hand forged in Nepal,by Nepalese craftsmen traditionaly made,,,CS "khukri" is no contest by any means against these....!!! Check two best companies both backed up by thousands of customers-Himalayan Imports and Khukuri House....you will have to wait a bit,few weeks for your order to be made and shipped from Nepal, but well worth it,(i have blades from both) these are serious, serious blades!!! ,,,not anything like mass production from CS,Kabar,Ontario etc-,far,far superior to it...

I think the CS is head and shoulders above the "traditional khukuris", and I have several of both kinds. Good steel, the heat treat is spot on, and it has excellent balance. It chops well and would be well suited for self defense. Mine are around 10 years old (Carbon V) and have definitely withstood the test of time.
