hi, im newbie here, need advice from you guys regarding in hatamoto
im interested to buy this knife for everyday personal defense, when i watch the coldsteel video in all their knife its impressed me & want to have it so i select hatamoto, its like a small samurai, hope you can give me advice to this. thanks

I have one. Its has a very rough texture G10 handle and its got lots of sharp edges. Its also pretty large. I would rather carry it in a leather sheath than in a pocket. In the pocket its difficult to deploy and wears on clothing heavily.

thanks for your reply, i thought it has a smooth finish, how about the blade is it very tough like a samurai? i have a spyderco but i dont like the blade even its a vg10 , i try to slash the mango leaves the blade loose the sharpness & when the blade hit in any metal accidentaly it will cut the edges easily, so im planning to get another knife to replace my spyderco.

decent knife but a little high priced in my opinion. also kinda felt like a big bar of steel with some g-10 wrapped around it. pretty much sqare handle with square blade. not much to it.

Ummmm. Maybe you don't know this, but hitting a knife on metal will dull the edge. VG-10 is a lot better (imo) then their San Mai stuff.

It looks like a good knife, I've never handled one, but it's very pricey. Not sure I'd spend that much on it. If you're looking for a good SD blade (which there aren't many) look for something like the Civilian (Spyderco) or CS has something similar. There are also some "waved" knifes (Emerson) that open on the faster side.

I have one civilian, police & harpy i want to try cold steel after watching their video, i think the price of cs a bit high couse we paying the titanium metal & the strength of the blade, i notice they use this in car hood the edge of the blade is still in good shape, its a piercing knife. My second choice aside from cs is kanetsune knife.

If you carry your civilian or police, then in my opinion you have all the SD blades you'll ever need.
Since you feel the consumerist itch, perhaps buy something really different like a Fallkniven F1.

Before you spend the money on that Hatamoto, take a look at the Cold Steel Gunsite II, a tanto folder with a 5" partially serrated blade.

The Gunsite II folder is a very similar knife, with very similar performance---for only about a fourth of the Hatamoto's street price.

There are significantly better options at the two C-note price range than the Hatamoto. I'm not arguing that Cold Steel makes an inferior product---I've handled several Black Sables and other high-end knives. If they cost about as much as a Spyderco Police or Military, they might even be viable options to add to my collection. That being said, look around. Zero Tolerance, Microtech, Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, Fallkniven, Bark River...the list is endless...offer excellent and better knives at this price range.

I think it is a hard task to find a knife more functional and designed for cutting than a Spyderco. Despite its great cutting power, it was never designed to cut other metal. If I want to do that, I use the metal saw on my Gerber 600-series DET multitool.

I believe any Benchmade or Spyderco could easily replicate the performance of Cold Steel's knives in their videos. And they are made in the United States of America (although I note the OP is in the Phillippines, and therefore this may not be an issue like it is for some of us if he's not a U.S. citizen).

If you have your heart set on Cold Steel, I would recommend the X2 Voyager, the Vaquero Grande, or the Rajah II---all big-time cutters, more economical prices, and very impressive.

Good luck.

I'm not saying that CS makes bad knives. They may have a very odd idea about proper marketing, but the knives are good. Acceptable. Piercing a car hood it a lot different then stabbing someone.

The Hatamoto has a (seemingly) very thick tip to it. Great if you stab cars, but most of the times it just gets in the way. Piercing knives are generally thin in the tip, and taper down. Say the Police or Military Spyderco models. I would recommend those (for piercing) over the Hatamoto.

However, if you're looking for a generally strong tip, then I'd say go for it. That or the several other recommended knives.

Just a little thing to think about, but you can get a Strider RCC for about 300 as I recall. I haven't handled a hatamoto, and while it looks really cool, I think if I was spending that much money, I'd be looking into CRK and Strider.

how about the spyderco citadel auto? it is better than VG10 blade or the VG10 still the best? its hard to find this knife in online store not all store have this.

It's very difficult to say a steel is "best". What does "best" mean? Too many factors go into a good blade to just worry about the steel. VG-10 is a very good steel. For special purposes, another steel might be a little bit better but cost more to work with.

For what you want ( from the same CS range ) I believe that Caledonian Edge is better.
