Have any of you guys ever handled some of Cold Steels Higher End Knives? The ones with Polished Linen Micarta And Polished SS Bolsters, with San Mai Steel? They are said to be put together by hand, is that true? Where by hand?

I dont own a Cold Steel Knife, Just an Emerson, some Benchmades, and a Spyderco, but am wondering if these more Expensive Cold Steel offerings are in fact a quality product which compares with other knives at that price point, or is it just overhyped?

I don't know anything about "high-end" CS knives, but Andrew Demko, the designer of many of their knew knives and the inventor of their updated lock-back system, does custom knives too.

The San Mai .... Japan knives are well made .... but at the same time ... a LITTLE over priced. They don't scream custom .... super high quality production to me.

they are very well made , strong locks , titanium , polished blades , micarta ( hatamoto g10 ) etc ... , but they are discontinued so if you want one get it while you can .
btw this knifes big and heavy , not for every one .
i already posted this photo , as you see i have 3 of them and like them all, but Talwar is my favorite !!!

Isn't most everything put together by hand?

They label their high end stuff "hand made"....I think thats a bit of stretch. While it may be literally true (they aren't made by robots :D), I think its taking liberties with what most people consider "hand made". They also imply quantities are limited due to it being "hand made"...again not exactly accurate. They push a questionable concept pretty hard.

The higher end stuff is pretty darn well made, f&f is usually very good to excellent. Materials are very good. And many are B I G. They package them fairly nicely in a faux metal box (read silver plastic), though I think a nice zippered pouch would be more appropriate at the price point.

I've been attracted to many of the high end items, but frankly found the price too high.

I do have a Talwar, Spectre, and Black Rhino. I'm very happy with all three, particularly at the price I got them for. I bought all of them at closeout/discontinued prices from CS.
For example the Black Rhino was $260 MSRP, but at closeout it was onlly $65! Oustanding value at the price, I should have bought two.

Plus one on the Black Rhino! I bought one for the closeout price and it's great! A big folder but I use it as my Sunday knife. Nothing to be ashamed of with these. IMO

If you can get them for a reasonable price I think it's worth it. Personally I'd buy a Hatamoto or Black Rhino if I could get it for $125 or less, the others dont interest me. I don't think they are worth anymore then that, and I have no idea how they came up with those MSRP's....

I've always loved the looks of the 'Caledonian Edge'... Clean lines and modern materials in a Sgian Dubh folder? Very nice.

When they were still making them, though, the price tag was a joke. $439.99 MSRP? Who are they kidding?

well , why do you wanna pay MSRP ? there is lots of sites with street price , i think I paid $240 for mine. ( not sure)

The Rhino really is a nice item. TRI-AD lock plus great look and feel. It's one of the few CS "handmades" thats probably worth the street price. I see it listed for ~$155, which aint bad.
To me, the closeout price of $65 was a huge bargain. I'm still kicking myself for not getting more than one, it would have been excellent trade material.

I, and probably others, just use MSRP as a consistent comparison point. Don't think anyone wants to pay MSRP. :D
