I've been trying to make my mind up over buying this one for the last few months...

Can anyone offer any comments?

I have a pair of Cold Steel Oyabuns (9" blades, double hollow ground, extremely sharp, very light & quick). It is available for $59 on Ebay. I have been watching the Magnum Tanto w 12" blade. It costs mid $2xx. My personal favorite is my newly purchased Laredo Bowie. It would be interesting to train with a Bowie in the right hand and a Tanto in the left hand (I am right handed). I hope you enjoy what ever you get!

These are the knives that made Cold Steel famous and, obviously, have been around since the beginning of the company. They are Japanese made and of very high quality, fit and finish. The balance varies by blade length but the IX, while blade heavy, is pretty good in that respect. Just like every golf course has a signature hole, this is Cold Steel's signature series of knives.

I've always been curious myself why the Tai Pan series is so expensive...800$? Think of what you could buy with that.

It is a very good knife.
Don't worry about it's quality,
it is there.
Your biggest concern should be
Is this right for me?

I've had one of the 9 inch Magnum Tantos, and I found that it had a nice "feel" to it. I now only own a 6 inch "standard" CS Tanto, and although it is alot easier to carry, there is just "something" about the 9 inch Tanto that is hard to put into words...It just feels "right", and has a nice balance to it while it's "in the air".
