Got this Chinese Cold Steel Kobun from a friend... I think it is real because it looks exactly the same as the one in Cold Steel catalogue 2006... Should be grateful for opinions...
I must admit that I do not like plastic sheaths and of course this sheath have a crack on both sides... What can I do about that... Any help at all should be very much appreciated... I can maybe make a leather sheath but frankly speaking I do not know if the blade is worth it... I am suspicious when it comes to blades from China... Again, grateful for opinions...

Best,
H

As for that knife’s authenticity, I think jlauffer jlauffer can chime in. Not sure if there’s been a Chinese production Kobun. The current ones are made in Taiwan.

The “cracks” are a normal part of the design to allow the mouth of the sheath to spread when inserting/drawing the knife.

Not positive if CS made kobuns in China briefly, I think they may have. The counterfeits usually say Taiwan, if any country is etched at all. They also usually have weird looking sharpening choils. I’ll add more info if I remember more.

Right, the sheath is a "pancake" style made from two pieces that are riveted together with the eyelets. As jux t says, this allows the throat to spread when inserting/removing the knife as part of the retention.

As for the knife, I am by no means an expert on Kobuns, but CS did make various knives in China for a year or two back around 2006/07, and then switched to Taiwan. One thing that seems strange on this one is that the markings are on the opposite sides of the blade compared to pics I've looked at. However, the pic in the 2006 catalog does seem to show it this way, so that alone wouldn't be enough to make me think it's fake.

Yeah, I’ve seen legitimate Kobuns with “kobun” and “cold steel” stamped on either side.

Thank you, guys for your answers. I really appreciate it.
Just now I was talking with the guy who I got the Kobun from and when he told me where he bought it it is highly unlikely that it should be a fake... I can also think that if you shall make a fake it should be smarter to take some other model to fake than a Cold Steel Chinese made Kobun... but when it comes to the Chinese you never know... If you can make a fake of the Swedish military bayonet m/96 then I guess you can fake whatever... I mean these bayonets you can buy here for coffee money so to speak...

Anyone here who knows about the quality of the Cold Steel models made in China... Maybe not so good because I guess they should still have been making them there if it was good...

Again, thank you guys!
