Hi all, just a quick question concerning the Kraton grips on some of my Cold Steel knives being loose on the tang. Has anybody had a similar exxperience, like water entering between the tang and the kraton handle and the water coloring blue/green because of the brass hilt "disolving" and play between kraton and the tang.
Did Cold Steel resolve this for you ?? and how. Please let me know because I don't like the idea of grips loosening on knives that are proclaimed to be 'the sharpest', 'the strongest' in existance

for it's price. My kraton grips are most certain NOT. The knives are less then 5 years old and no I didn't kill oil drums with it nor tried cutting arm thick ropes with it .
Please help, Helen

Further evidence for my anti-kraton campaign!
Extra strong blades should have extra strong handle material.

I'm not suggesting that those who have had problems with the kraton grips are wrong. I'm sure they're right. But it doesn't always happen. I've had a Trailmaster for many years. I've beaten the hell out of it on trips to the NWT and northern Ontario. No problem at all, except with rusting of the Carbon V blade.

I'd call Cold Steel's Customer Service Dept. and see what they have to say. It might still be covered under their warranty and as long as the knife has'nt been "grossly misused" I think they would probably fix it or replace it. Worth a try!

My CS TANTO had problems with its kraton. However, it just seemed to wear away fast, as opposed to grow loose over time. Give CS a call and if they won't rep/srvc your knives, think about investing time/money in having custom grip material installed...i think i am going to do this to my REC TANto, and i know i def would have spent the extra on my trail mstr had my woman not left it in the woods somewhere in upstate ny!!!

btw if anyone finds it...it haz "WZL" etched into the black coating...so you'll know it was mine!!!

yeah, my trailmaster had a loose grip the day i got it. however i fixed it by pulling back the grip and squirting some rtv high temp silicone gasket maker in between the tang and the kraton. it filled in the void and stuck the two together just fine. i am thinking about installing micarta though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Kraton swell with use, absorbing oils, etc?

Kraton is on my short list of "hate it" materials...

I had two CS push daggers many years ago. The handles became loose from just being carried. Oddly, this did not bother the guy I sold them to.

The handles on my other CS have not become loose. CS kraton handles do make an excellent eraser.

I have a CS Trailmaster without any handle for the last few months.I did get some black linen micarta® to replace the kraton.I had a slit in the top part of the handle about 5/16" long or so clear through to the tang. When I removed the kraton there was visible rust that has since been removed.
There were two small steel keepers spot welded just above the brass guard that keeps it in place and from shoving it back into the kraton if any glue should fail.

I have been considering what kind of guard to replace it with.I ain't puttin a double guard back on.I like the knife, just didn't ever get to likeing the handle real well.
The brass grommet through the tang at the back is what keeps the kraton on the knife.

I think the stuff (kraton?) on the SRK is stiffer, but it may be my imagination.
As cheap as they are I don't care if it rusts or not.

If you mix milk of magnesia with vodka and orange juice do you get a phillips screwdriver?

Khukuri FAQ

I'm starting to think someone could make a living here replacing rubber handles!
I have several that I would like to get replaced. Any volunteers?
I don't trust myself to do it properly and I don't know of anyone that specializes in rehandling.
Any ideas?

Yep. On Trailmasters and Recon Scouts. But not on any SRKs, Recon Tantos, LTC Kukris nor Bushrangers that I' ve experience with.

my srk is about ten years old and the handle is starting to get loose, probably from years of abuse.

Ok I think CS uses two different kinds of kraton, because the kraton on my master hunter and Bush Ranger is as hard as a rock. I have pulled and squeezed, but it won't move at all. The Kraton on my little mini-pal was much softer and spongy.
