any thoughts on the kobun? likes/dislikes, carryability? carry location? i didn't like the rubber handle for concealed carry, sold mine, thinking it over i might have to buy another if i can find a good price.

I really like the Kobun. It would be nice to see the availability of a G-10 handled Carbon V version. Great knife though. I do like the 420HC.

i carried mine inverted, on my left side under my arm, i just looped a strap from my left armpit to my right shoulder and cliped the sheath underneath, i found that it was a good carry position. I have a carbon v version and it is extreamly sharp.

i dont mind kraton handles i think they offer a solid grip in all conditions, but the handle is quite thin, which reduces grip options (my fav are hammer reverse, and a sideslashing grip)

also consider the CS mini tac

which is better carbon v or stainless and which do they charge more for? i thought one was cheaper than the other?

IIRC the Carbon V version was cheaper at my knife source.
I got the Carbon V model, because frankly, it rocks. It takes a wickedly keen edge and holds it rather well. It's not THE best edge holder, but IMO it is in the top 10%. The knife is not at all difficult to carry discreetly for a knife with a blade length of 5 5/8" long.

It's relatively thin 1/8" blade and 1/2" thick handle is a benefit in this regard.
I carry mine RH small of back or right side IWB. This works for me even though I am somewhat overweight.
I've been quite pleased with this knife.

I like the Kobun, it's a really good defensive carry piece for the price. I would definitely take it over the CRKT Companion, for example. But once you move up several times in price, there are better options. That's why I'm selling mine for $30 - check the FS individual forum if you're interested.

I don't have a Kobun, but I told myself that if I was ever going to buy one, I was going to seriously conside the Newt Livesay UJI (chisel ground tanto)- differential heat treat, micarta handles, kydex sheath - all for $50! http://newt.livesay.com

At that price... I was going to get one anyway, but YMMV.

the msrp for the carbon V version is much more than for the stainless, but usually they can be found for the same price, i wouldnt even bother with the stainless version unless you have to have serrations

PS a kobun can chop down a sapling in two strokes (1 in diameter, pine)

i LOVED my kobun, other than there would be NO WAY i could explain it to any LEO here in Super Safe Chicago (2.5" limit).

Ha! Tell me about it, vactor. But maybe I can get away with my Black Cloud sharktooth because it's a custom - "see, officer, look at the pretty wood handle - this isn't a weapon, it's art!"

BTW, thank goodness for that blade limit, huh - I feel MUCH safer walking in East Roger's Park, knowing that law protects me.

yup. safe as safe can be. um, you ever talk to a chicago police officer? think you can REALLY explain that away as 'art'? LOL. i said screw it and have a spydercard (2.5") and a SWEEEEEEEET Camillus Mini Talon (2.25"). that Mini Talon is AWESOME!!!

yep, south side is safer as it is ... HAHAHhahahah

I had oen but traded it.

It has a very slim profile, which makes it easy to carry. And indeed, it takes a great edge.

To help with the grip, wrap it with paracord. The one I had was wrapped, and it made for an awesome grip. Just wrap over the rubber. It makes the handle a bit thicker while stil providing a secure grip.
