hi trying to make my mind up on what kukri i should buy. i have heard many say that the cold steel coukd break i am on a budget. i need a knife for chopping. can some one suggust one.

Himalayan Imports on this forum would be my first stop. Find one you like and watch the sales they have posted here.

Top quality. Nothing against the CS line but the HI are top notch!

Also check out Ontario's Kukri I have one and it's awesome and about 65.00. I use it alot feels great and is a better chopper than my CS trail Hawk IMO.
The down side to it is the sheath I love ontario's knives but they have crappy sheaths!

Anyway here is a pic of it and MADE IN USA!

I've made several spoons with it and a spoon knife

Also not really a kukri but check out the outcast it's a D2 large kukri style blade and with some work on the edge is a real chopper also! But I still say the ontario!

I'm one of first to recommend HI, but not where the buyer in question is on a budget. Goldman, what exactly do you need to chop, and what is your budget? My instinctive response to a cheap chopper is an 18" Tramontina machete. But that's cheap, as in $10-$20 cheap. If you can go up to $100, HI definitely enters the equation.

Go to YouTube and look for "Cold Steel Kukri Machete Destruction Test Part 1" and part 2 on to part 6. Here's the first one to get you started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_m4xErfJXw

The guy is cutting concrete blocks and steel pipe with it. Then he puts it in a vice and beats it with a sledge until it's bent 90 degrees, then bends it back. It doesn't break.

yeah i need to stay under $40 i would be chopping small tree's and using for camping. i have other machetes but not like the kukri.

I don't have much experience with CS khukuris, but from what I understand, it is essentially a bent machete. I would hazard a guess that it won't provide too much more performance than machetes in a similar price range (which also offer arguably better performance due to longer lengths).

Check out some threads in the Himalayan Imports Cantina subforum for comparisons between the Cold Steel khuks and HI khuks. The spine thickness difference alone is staggering. For your purposes of general camp use, you should do just fine with a decent machete like a Tramontina. Unless you just want to buy a new toy, in which case, don't let me stop you buying what you want. I can definitely empathise with the wanting to buy a new gadget just for fun.

However, I do suggest you save your money and wait til you can buy a HI khukuri. It'll be worth it.

While I'm a fan of HI and Tora, for the budget-minded would-be khukuri owner, I might instead suggest the cheap Windlass khukuris. Sure, the heat treat, fit and finish aren't as good, but many folk who've had them and used them say that they make for a decent beater for about $20-$30. I had one about 16 years ago myself, but it got stolen before it could see any use. :(

I cannot speak for H.I., but the Carbon V version of the CS khukuri is outstanding. It has been my primary heavy chopper on a number of extended stays in the woods, and it has always served me well. I have really beat on that thing (throwing it at trees, battening hardwood etc etc.) and the edge has held up very well.

Sarco sells a decent chopper for only $23.50. I has a heavy blade with a full thickness tang. At this price you can get a decent beater knife with money left for a nice Himalayan Imports Kukri too. The Sarco knife is a heavy durable knife that you should be able to have in hand within a couple weeks. Plus, at that price you won't get upset if you manage to hurt it.
