hi everyone, i've just joined this wonderful forum and this is my first thread tho i posted this in a couple of days ago.

i own a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri and i am planning to fit a hilt on it. i wonder if anyone had come across a pic (or x-ray) of the full tang (without the handle) of this Kukri blade. i'd appreciate any help here as i am trying to visualise the tang before designing the hilt.

alternatively, any pointer on how i can determine the tang (without cutting out the kraton handle) to fit a guard on the khukri is most appreciated. : )

I don't have any pics but Cold Steels first Proof video showed how the Trail Master was heat treated and how the handle was put on. The assembly process should be the same for the Kukri.

The Kraton handle is held on by the brass thong hole rivit at the end. Remove the rivet then slide the handle off by pushing from the tang end. Pushing from the tang end will allow the kraton to expand and slide off.

thanks a mil i'll try that - um how do i remove the rivet safely so i can put the rivet back safely? heh before your post i had far fetched ideas such as getting an x ray . have to admit i went as far as sticking in a needle at some points and measuring the depth.
lol so your suggestion is the best !

It' looks like they use a piece of copper or brass tubing for the rivit. They flare it on either end to lock it in place. Use a drill bit the diameter of the hole plus 2X the wall thickness of the tubing. I don't know the diameter but a piece of brake line might be close. The idea is that the drill bit will be very close the outside diameter of the tubing and cut the expanded portion of the tubing off. In reality there will be a very thin layer of metal left and you should be able to break off the flaired section on one side and push the remainder through.

I have used this method before with leather copper rivets and it works well. Drill slow with slight pressure the copper/brass heats up "very" quickly.

Good luck !!

I just noticed your in Singapore. I was their a number of years back on business nice place.

thanks again
i used a piece of spare bicycle rubber and tried to push through with a pair of long nosed pliers. I managed to push one side as far as the tang but could not go further. hmm might have to use your method then. i was trying to save the rivet all this while. anyway now i have the way. time to look for a s shaped guard so i can hook the blade on my sling. (i dont think i'll be drilling anywhere on the blade to secure the guard. i have thought of using a sort of cold weld compund but i'm not sure if it can hold the guard reliably during heavy usage.) i gues the best way is to fit the guard along the tang like in a foil or epee.

thanks for the compliment, call of me if u drop by again and i'd be happy to show u around.

any ideas for a s shaped guard will be welcomed! i m thinking of a brass guard with elongated end of an S. one end to guard the fingers and the other to hook the blade onto a belt or sling while we're hiking. i might even go for the ice skate blade protector idea once the guard is in place.
