Hey guys, I was wondering which of these two you would recommend, or more-so which would be more like the original LaGana's. I was considering trying to have a custom replica made, but I figure if I can pick one up without all of that, it'd be preferred. Plus I'm soon headed to Texas for a good ol' week long camp, and would love to have a good hawk on my side. :) If anyone could do a comparison between the Cold Steel and an original, that'd be especially cool. Thanks guys!

ATC VTAC.......no comparison. The VTAC is the most recent incarnation (and most improved) of the original Lagana. Like Dusty said, if you want it to last, go VTAC.

Glad you like it Fox;)

I absolutely love it!

I sometimes work as a laborer for a small contracting company. We recently had to demolish part of a house that was damaged by a fire to rebuild it. So, I thought of it as a good opportunity to have a little fun with the VTAC and brought it along with me. I took down a whole wall with it flawlessly. These things are tough as nails.

Right now I have it strapped to my hiking pack and take it with me on every hike. I always appreciate the light weightiness of it in these situations.

Good deal! I never found anything that I could use it on for demo work... Rather jealous:) didja check out the Fehrman kydex?

I did check out the Fehrman kydex sheath. It looks like a well designed sheath but the only thing I didn't like about it is that it doesn't have a safety strap to prevent the hawk from ever coming loose from the sheath. When I'm outdoors and have it on my pack I tend to do a lot of jumping and running, so I'm a bit concerned that it would come off the sheath from so much movement and vibration. I still am considering buying it and just making the safety strap myself though. I like the fact that it's lighter and less bulky than the nylon sheath.

I have seen some with those soft rubber IWB loops made by Blade-Tech used for safety/retention straps on the sheath. Looks like a good idea to me!

The only reason I considered the Cold Steel is it seems to be closer to the design of the original LaGana's. I've heard quite often that the VTAC is too short and too light, so I was curious.

In my opinion the Cold Steel tomahawk is a fairly close replica of the original, but I would recommend the VTAC as the others have.

Years ago when I received my first VTAC, I felt the same way. Thought it was too short and light. After a few days using it, I quickly realized the thought that went into the design of it. Numerous tomahawks later (and a few more VTACS because I love them so much!) I can tell you the length and weight couldn't be more perfect as far as I'm concerned. The balance feels about as sweet as can be, making it extremely quick, yet delivers a very powerful strike. The composite handle was designed to have enough flex or "whip" to extrapolate impact forces and it also improves the "feel" of an object you may be trying to pry open. You may think that it a very strange statement but if your using the VTAC for all of its intended purposes, you will see how this is true and makes a positive improvement over a one piece design for medium prying or breaching uses.

Again, I think you will be very pleased with the VTAC over the CS

Having bought both several years back, the Cold Steel version throws extremely well (as in, my landlord who never threw 'hawks or knives stuck it on the first try) and has a sharper spike, which is still plenty stout. But the wooden handle, like all wooden handles eventually do, broke. The ATC is a good head, but the spike is less likely to penetrate a tire, for instance. The handle is absolutely rock-solid on the head and extremely tough.

Both are good, but if my life was on the line, the handle of the ATC would make me go that direction.
