Cold steel machete series issue

I would be very interested of buying cold steels kukri matchete, but I'm worried that I end up with inferior product.

I have had a few of them and never had a burnt edge. The last one I bought had a nicer edge than the previous ones did. I would plan on fixing the edge on any machete that I bought unless you get an Esee, TOPS or a fiddleback.

Glad to hear that : ) there's ALOT of bad words going around internet about cold steels products. I DON'T want to leave out good cutlery experience just because hate boys, soooo..

I literally have 30 or more Cold Steel machetes including all of the kukri models. While some were not the sharpest out of the box, a machete is not expected to be razor sharp. Many I have received in the past needed a bit of edge work for my high standards but were on an acceptable level for a machete. I will say that Cold Steel has really stepped up their game as far as sharpeness goes over the last 2 years. The last several models I have received have had what I consider an excellent edge. The regular knives (outside the machete models) seem to be always spot on with the edge. And for the record, the $70 Esee lite machete I purchased had the worst edge I've ever seen on a new machete. Jeff Randall told me that wasn't uncommon on a machete. I sharpened it out and moved on.

I have no issue if the edge is not sharp out of the box as I'm skilled sharpener. What I'm intially worried about is that the tool has bad heat treat and/or burnt edge and won't take keen edge. I do martial arts and over years I have becomed fond on knives and knife skills. Now I want to move on bigger knives, to kukri, being more specific. Before I get gurkha kukri, which has mezmerised me totally in youtube, I want to try and practise on cheaper model, just to see how it fits in my hand. This means alot of target practise, bottles and bamboo mats, and I want the edge to be able to perform. However I'm short on budget so I don't want to 'bite the bullet' by taking a chanche. I want to be sure that I a get good product.

Does cold steel machetes take shaving sharp edge and how good edge retention they have?

I have conveyed the edges on all of my machetes and they will all shave my arm, never tried my face. I haven't paid real close attention to the edge holding but it must be decent if I have never worried about it.

Ok you have convinced me : ) Next question, kukri machete or magnum kukri machete? Which on feels more balanced in hand? I know that you may haven't thought it in this way, but which one you would prefer in combat?

Of your 2 options, I would go with he Magnum Kukri Machete. However, I really like the new Royal Kukri Machete more then either you mentioned.

Yea the royal kukri machete looks awesome indeed! It came out last fall, right? Yet I have not seen it in any Finnish store : (..

I used my cheap Kukri machete right out of the box to chop 1-3 inch limbs off a tree. It worked decent but the edge folded some. I took it to the flea market and a guy worked on it for about 5 minutes with a file to get a rough edge started. I ordered a Lanski Puck and have been working on it slowly after each use. I think a very basic edge is adequate for the type of use that it is designed for. I used it the other day to trim the thick, super sharp spines from the trunk of my sago palm. Worked perfectly.
