Hi,

I'm looking at the (new?) line of Cold Steel machetes as they seem to be a cheap, reasonably effective home-defence solution that I can also use for some outdoor work. First, am I right in thinking that? They're not junk?

Second, which model would you recommended? I am leaning towards the barong model as it looks like it would be good for both stabbing and slashing. I would want the 18" version. Is this a suitable choice?

Thanks :)

I don't like CS....I've owned a few of their knives and neither their product, or their service when that product breaks when it shouldn't, impressed me.

If I were worried about hacking at a human being, or anything in the yard, I'd get a kukri. Here's some reasonably priced ones:

from the ganjawala dragon kukri
This is a very old kukri and very famous among farmers and villagers in the remote eastern Nepal. Unlike other kukris, this kukri has a number of small tools along with the basic sharpner and small knife at the back of its case used for different purposes thus making it handier and special during trekking and jungle tour. The small extra tools are a chisel, a hole maker, a ear cleaner (a must for villager to kill his time when he has nothing to do) and a tweezer. It also has a extra hole for a pencil to go in if needed to carry one. It also comes with a small pouch at the back of its case to carry dry straws, coins, matches and lime stones or anything valuable. This kukri also has a colorful case making it attractive.
:confused::confused::D

hehehe :p strange pastime culture over there

Something that long and heavy probably make a poor stabber, very hard to manuver.

I am not a fan of CS or their business practices but their machetes are pretty good and made in SA by a reputable company. Expect to take some time fixing the edge though.
I gave my sister one of their kukuri machetes for selfdefence ,best 16$(with sheath) I ever spent. The new ones have better handles, I would also consider the bowie one.

I just picked up a "Bolo" for 5 bucks @ the swap meet. Seems nice enough, I agree though about the edge... then again, it is after all a machete. I wonder however what kind of steel this is... Anyone know?

The Cold Steel machetes are actually pretty decent. I have the double edged model, and it has performed quite well. I have no complaints about mine. The machete will require major sharpening upon arrival. If you don't have a belt grinder, you are in for some work. The edge on mine was essentially non existant. The barong or bowie models would be my first choice for SD.

If you don't mind spending a little more money, consider this: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BJ017

I have one, and it's great.

I have five or so CS Machetes. I did have to sharpen them but they are tough and hold the edge pretty well. I sharpened my CS double edge very sharp on one edge for cutting and a bit wider edge for chopping on the other edge. I like them but then I like everything CS. IMO they are good values. I am speaking of their working knives, they have some fancy over priced stuff like all othere companies as well.
