Cold Steel Mackinac Hunter - any good??

It sure looks like a nice knife but does anyone have any real world experience with it?

my main questions are: is there blade play? is the fit and finish decent? and is it as nice as it looks?

I get the scales are faux but that's a good thing imo, I just want it to be solid, have no blade play and feel like a strong knife. I don't normally buy lock knives as they often seem to have blade play and I don't like that. My latest efforts to get a decent Buck 110 took a long time, and although I now have a good one it's just not the same.. bad air I think. :(

So is this knife good? is it going to fulfill my 'needs' for a properly sturdy locker?

cheers gents!

I bought one a while back good knife wish the handle inserts had been a real bone or stag but meh no big deal came razor sharp too which was nice.

I would bet it is very strong and as solid as it gets. Even the Voyagers are and they are plastic with aluminum liners...the Mackinak is a full steel frame. I practice bowie style back cuts with a Voyager and have hacked down saplings with it - still zero blade play even when half-way disassembled. Would be easy to put custom scales on them if you end up not liking the faux stag after all.

I knwo a few guys who do some lovely handle jobs so I'm sure they can upgrade it for me should the need arise! :D

that sounds very promising! I think I will sell a few bits and go for one :)

I've got a few cold steel tools and they are all good imo! bushman, sharkie pen, spec forces shovel and then roach belly are all decent.

Well if you decide to sell on this forum I bet they will sell fast so you should have your knife in no time I will keep an eye out for any deals on the mackinac hunter and post a link to it if I find anything.

Well I live in England so I will be rammed with import duties and taxes so i will try to secure a deal over here first. Thanks alot for your time dude :) much appreciated!

it is a nice knife..... for the price & what your getting id still go for the 110 just because it has more appeal to me

If you're having trouble with horizontal blade play on a buck 110 you can fix it in less than a minute with a vise or hammer. Just wrap something like cardboard around the bolster and give it some light taps or a gentle squeeze.

I do like the look of the cold steel, the triad lock is great I just couldn't get past the faux scales.

well I've had 3 110's and I'm not sold..

I tried that fix on my first 110, it does sort the play out but it's not perminant. the pin needs peening to keep the bolsters in place. I do like the 110 alot, but not for it's quality or fit anf finish unfortunately. The cold steel products have always been good imo and this one looks like a nice traditonal solid locker to replace my 110.

Pros:
Thin
Like blade shape
Cheap

Cons:
Handles are slick (but I can make some micarta or G10 for it easily)
The lock is super stiff and edges are sharp (I knocked the edges off with a file and some sand paper).
The clip is super stiff too, and with the slipery handles, it can be hard to get out of the pocket.
Steel is so/so.

Over all I can make some mods to get it into a good folder.

the mackinac hunter is very solid no play at all comes very sharp and looks awesome once you make new scales. Compared to the 110 its no contest every 110 I've held has side to side play the blade is thin and out of the three I've had I have broken two tips.

They can look quite nice with stonewash and/or new scales, too. Some I saw on YouTube.
