Got my $17.95 Cold steel magnum kukri in the mail today and wow, what an amazing price. yes it is new and not used. that includes shipping to me which probally cost at least 8 dollars if not more (I'd bet more due to the size of the box it came in).

I expected the crappy stock edge but a few mins on the belt sander and then paper wheels and I now have a mirror edge which I can shave hair with now. Unfortunatly its not as sharp as I'd like, it passes HHT-2 where it will shave a peice of hanging hair in to slices but I'd prefer if it could get to HHT-4 where the hair would just pop away from the base as soon as it touchs the edge but I dont think the angle is anywhere near as thin as it needs to be to get there. If I did lower the angle that much, I dont think it would survive being a heavy chopper which is what I'm intending it to be.

I don't understand why everyone complains about the sheath. seems fine to me. I mean it does what its suppose to which is to protect the edge and not let it cut me. Sure a leather sheath would be nice but at this price, who cares?

To be honest, it isn't quite as big as I though it might be which is a good thing in some ways. Then again, I'm quite glad I didnt get the regular cs kukri as I would not want something 4 inches shorter which I think would be way too small for a machette. I do wish it were heavier though which may make it a better chopper, haven't used it yet though so I have no idea how it will do as is.

For the money, I don't see how you can do better. When I need a new set of throwing knifes, I think I'll pick up a few of these. I mean most throwing knifes from CS now adays are in the 20-25 dollar range plus shipping and this one is an amazing 18 bucks shipped to me!

Haven't used it yet, will post more when I do.

People used to complain about the OLD sheaths, which lacked the supporting polymer panels that it has now. Their machete sheaths used to be so thin and floppy that you'd cut through them just getting them out of the sheath if you had a half decent edge on them. :)

while playing around with the blade with the sheath on, I noticed that if you attempt to swing it, the sheath will fly foward and half way off the blade. sorta odd as I though the sheath would hold on to the blade pretty good but aparently not and I wonder if the blade would come loose/come out if held on a belt. I'm not really planning on carrying it on me, gonna either throw it in a backpack or in the back of the car if I'm gonna transport it. Mainly its just gonna be for use around the house.

I really doubt you'll ever have any trouble with the machete flying out of the sheath. I can't think of a way you could replicate that same forceful motion with the sheath actually on your belt. :)

I was thinking if I had it on my belt and I fell foward, the blade might come out of the sheath. IDK, just thinking outloud.

I think the worst that would happen is it would slide up slightly, but not so much as to expose the edge. It's good that you're thinking ahead like that, though! It's the best way to ensure appropriate and speedy reaction in an emergency.

when it came out of the sheath last time, It came out 1/3 way out which exposed about 6-7 inches of the blade. I like to sharpen things up and this edge I already mentioned can pass the HHT-2. That much blade sticking out and swinging around could be a hazard but its sorta useless for me to worry about it as I already mentioned I'm not gonna be carrying it around like that on me.

Just thinking about how other people may carry it and the hazzards it may bring/stuff to watch out for.

So, how's it work? Does it make for a good machete? Have you had a chance to clear a trail yet?

Congrats on that! Best of luck. :)

hopefully it goes well, IDK if it will ever get off the ground though. Finding 120k to start a new medical business when im already 300k+ in debt is... tough

plus rent being 3-4k a month for 800-1000sq/ft is quite expensive but thats what ya gotta pay...

Yowza! Sounds like no small undertaking, but if I were a betting man I'd put money on you making it.

Finnaly I got to play with a CS Magnum kukri. I retardedly bought another one cuz, well its 18 bucks shipped to me and I didn't wanna jack the nice one with the nice edge. That and I'm OCD as hell and have all kinds of wierd quirks. I actually put on a better edge on to the second one which came today and then I grinded a in a small edge in to the top of the blade to make it peirce things better ( its doubled edge machette now) and flatten the rest of the top of the blade so I can use it to strike fire starter/flints. Now if I only had some flint/fire starter to use haha. Just something I read some place just in case.
I also put on a lanyard on the handle just incase.

either way, I went out to trim a tree and it would go thru 1 inch branchs like nothing. I was just trimming the tree so I didn't get to cut thru anything that thick but I wacked a thick branch (3 inchs thick) without really too much force and this sucker just sunk into it quite deeply. I like this machette/Kukri. I'd highly recommend it, just make sure to get it sharpened nicely before using it! I actually tried to trim some stuff with the stock edge and it wouldnt even cut thru a 1/8 inch branch with me swinging it thru a full arc haha. Had to stop cuz I filled up the green bucket and didnt wanna just have trash outside my house.

Oh and I was using it without a set of gloves. My hands didnt really feel sore and I didnt have any blisters but I was not cutting down trees or using it for extended periods of time.

I'd love to cut into thick peices of meat and bones to see how the edge performs but no money for that right now. So far, the edge has not rolled or dulled at all, still quite sharp. Its pretty good steel I think. I had read that one would need to really grind a crap load of steel away from the edge to get to where the heat treat was good but for me, its been going good.

I've always thought of the CS machete Kukris as the poorman's alternative to higher priced kukris. I've been very impressed with mine and feel that it will chop with the big dogs. The 1055 while not super wear resistant is perfectly serviceable and exceptionally tough. I believe Noss over at knifetest.com did a D-test with one and was pretty impressed with it for what it's worth.

I think a lot of people dont even like to really call it a kukri but a machette which happens to be shaped some what like a kukri. either way, I like it and I think it chops good. I dont have a real kukri to compare it to though and to be honest I dont really know what a constitues a true kukri... perhaps anything with the same shape which isn't made by CS? (I know a lot of people hate CS with a passion for some odd reason) IDK
