I know these two knives have been discussed a lot here, but after deer season, and a good bit of field dressing, skinning, and butchering, I have to say that they both perform very, very well.

The Master Hunter for field dressing, and the Fieldcraft for skinning, are about as good as anything you can get for the money, in my opinion.

They take a great edge and hold it well, and they are well designed and the right size for whitetails. They both have good ergonnomic handles that provide a good grip.

I can't really see myself needing anything else for deer...but that doesn't stop me from admiring a nice custom or two. :)

Just wanted to give high marks to a couple of good knives.

BTW, I have the Master Hunter in Carbon V.

Nice to see some old stand by's work well.

I have a question for you about your Master Hunter. I have 2, an old and a fairly new one. The old one holds it's thickness out to an inch or so from the tip, the new one starts it's distal taper almost immediately. What is your's like? My new one is a second, so I don't know if that taper was a mistake, or if it's how they are making them now. It's really ugly compared to the old one, but sure does cut!

Glad that both of these worked well for you!

I have both the CS Master Hunter and the Fieldcraft, and agree they make a great combination. Also have an older Master Hunter and a newer one; the newer one does have a more pronounced distal taper. Great cutters.

I also have an older and a newer Master Hunter. The older sample is way thicker at the spine for most of it's length and the newer piece has a full length distal taper. The older model is thicker at the edge too.

The older seems to have been made with stoutness as the objective and the newer model as a pure cutter. If that is indeed the case I'd say they accomplished their task with flying colors.

Mine is an older model, and the taper doesn't start immediately. It still cuts plenty well, though.

I popped the brisket and the pelvis with it, and did all the field dressing, and it would still shave when I was done. That's plenty good for me.

What I like about these two is that both are great knives and actually give the user a variety if one has a preference. I like that option.
