Are these the original Mini pals? I scooped these up for $20 each. Anyone know what steel are these? Aus 8 or VG-1?

Are these the original mini pals first ever released? I would have expected leather sheaths if so.

Only some of the very early Push Knives got leather sheaths. Should be AUS8 I believe.

The Mini Pal is not in the 1988 brochure, but is in the 1992 Special Projects catalog I have, so came out somewhere around then, and is still available today. From 1992 till now, it has always had the plastic sheath, so I'm guessing even if it came out a few years before 92, it had the same sheath. You may be thinking of the original Urban Pal from the 80's, which was all metal (no material over the handle portion) and had a leather sheath.

Ok cool so these most likely are the original mini pals released, so I got a good deal. They are now in blue boxes and made in Taiwan and don't say California Ventura.

Pretty cool, I carried one of these for over ten years on my keychain. One day I went to pull it out of my pocket along with my keys after getting fuel and all that was there was the sheath. I looked all over that parking lot and store but never located it. I never did get another one but they are kind of handy. A kind of just incase type little knife. Well nice score and good luck with them.

Those are the original Mini Pals. The black boxes and press-release sheaths were the first iteration. I think that version had the best knives (precise grinds, fit-and-finish), but the worst sheaths. The blades were either too difficult or too easy to get out, as d762nato can attest. I was glad when Cold Steel went to friction-fit sheaths.

Very nice score, though! You got a good deal on that vintage stock, and they look to be in perfect shape.
