I finally got my new Cold Steel Mini Tac plain edge today. I had originally ordered the hai hocho, mostly because it's cheaper and I wanted a utility knife. So I ordered it from www.BotachTactical.com, and for some reason, two weeks later the knife hadn't come yet. (this was a week ago.) So I emailed them and they informed me that it was out of stock and wouldn't be in for a loooong time, so I changed my order to the Mini Tac. Boy am I glad I did. I've only had it a couple days, but it is a rock solid fixed blade neck knife for thirty bucks.
Blade
The blade is a pretty hefty tanto, thin but very wide. It has a really neat grind on the top edge, almost like a swedge, that I like alot. It says "Mini Tac" really nice and classy on the back near the hilt. It came extremely sharp from the factory, like every Cold Steel I've seen before. The steel is AUS-8 I think, and it has performed well on just a few chores so far.
Handle
Kraton is alot better stuff than I initially expected. It is light, durable, and really grippy in my hand, almost like rubber. I think it works better for a neck knife than something like G-10 which I think would be heavy. The only real complaint I have about the handle is that it is a little small, and I think in a situation where I would be stabbing or my hand would be bloody (just joking) my hand might slide onto the blade.
Sheath
The sheath is very nicely built, thin as it should be. Not too much to say about it, it's a standard neck knife sheath. It holds the knife securely without a rattle. It has eight lanyard holes and it is useful for a variety of carry styles. I like wearing it on my forearm under a jean jacket or something for a really well-concealed approach.
All in all, it's a great knife, great price, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that wanted a good new neck knife.
thanks!
