This is a new tactical folder from Cold Steel. The Night Force has a 4" x 1/8" blade of 440A SS sub-zero quench, handles of molded Zytel. Edge formats are plain and serrated. Pocket clip for tip up carry. Retail is set at $74.99.

This brings up a topic I was thinking about: Why has Cold Steel changed their serration pattern? It seems they are releasing knives with a Spyderco type pattern.

Clint - the Night Force is made in Taiwan instead of Japan. Hence the difference in the serration pattern. I was wondering when someone would bring this up :)

Any ideas on if and when they will change over to their "mini" pattern serrations? Are they waiting to see how the market goes then change or are they going for people who like normal serration styles. For that matter, why didn't they just make black blade voyagers? Night Force seems redundent compared to the new Pro Lites and the Scimitar.

I'm not sure if they really are going to change their serration pattern to the Spyderco type. Personally, I would love to see them go away from the micro serrations because they are a pain to sharpen. I guess it depends on the type of equipment that the factory has. Seems that all of the Japan made folders have the micro serrations, and the USA made/Taiwan made folders have the other type. I'm not really in a good position to answer this because I just don't know for sure! Only taking a shot in the dark here.

I see that little "legal to carry concealed in California" inset--is that right? I'm not really up on my knife laws but I thought CA was pretty strict...something like 3" blade length?

440A?

Yup, my feelings exactly. When I saw them I was hoping at least AUS-8. But if you notice the price points of the Night Force and Pro Lite folders, they are right there with CRKT.

When it comes to folders, California is shockingly lenient, considering its position on fixed blades and firearms. The overall summary is: outside of a few municipalities that have their own laws, any folder not considered a switchblade can be carried concealed as long as it's carried in the closed position. Add in the standard admonitions against courtrooms, schools, etc. You can carry a 6" Vaquero Grande and it's perfectly legal in most places.

That's a general summary, not a legal opinion!

I guess no one ever accused a knife law of being logical...it seems almost as if there is a complete absence of common sense when it comes to making up these laws.

I like the overall design of the Night Force. Looks like a linerlock version of the clip point Voyager with a more ergonomic handle. I only wish it had G-10 scales. :(
