Does anybody care to comment on Cold Steel's new Nightshade series? I don't know what exactly to think as I know next to nothing about plastic knives outside of the ones at fast food restaurants.

Yeah, I read that part too. They must think these fancy plastic letter openers will function better than the real thing in a life saving situation. Whatever... Just don't get caught trying to sneak one of these things into a government building or airport.

I have the Tanto and another one that they made a few years back , not pictured. They can be "sharpened" but dont expect it to hold an edge of course hehe. I bought them a specific purpose of which they would do the job quite adequitly.
Nevermind the naysayers , those are not plastic toys , if one can use the mundane as a weapon (rolled up magazine , sock full of quarters) imagine what you could do with one of those.
Plus they are cheap ! lol.. I saw a demonstration video where they hammered one of the Spike style thru a 2x4 , I didnt think it would hold , I stood corrected. Dont get me wrong , they arent a substitute for good old fashioned Steel , but they are cool.

Sure, they look "cool" and they can be used as stabbing weapons. So can a pen. I just don't buy into their hype. Okay, so you can punch through several layers of cardboard with a plastic knife. That just fails to impress me. It's nothing a steel knife can't to better. What real use to these plastic things have? A last ditch weapon for super-duper secret covert op ninjas? Fancy letter openers? Well....Come to think of it, they would make cool-looking cream cheese spreaders.

they look pretty worthless. the only use i see is in sneaking them past metal detectors, but that would usually involve a federal building such as a courthouse. and 1) there's no real need to carry something like the nightshade push dagger in a freakin courthouse, and 2) if you get caught in a courthouse with one of those you're going to jail.

another use I suppose would be in a high-end club/bar that checks for weapons at the door if you're really paranoid, but in general that's a bad idea. My basic rule is, if there's going to be alcohol, then the sharp things stay at home. The only thing that goes with me to a bar would be the leatherman squirt on my keychain.

I've seen the Skean Dhu has a serrated edge. This should allow some cutting - of course, not like the real thing, still. Seems to me like these are supposed to be single use and disposable knives.
Cool, now I can take my knife to the airplane with me  ;) :P

Someone once said(Criss Rock IIRC)and I paraphrase: "I don't go to clubs with metal detectors. Sure you feel safe inside but what about when you leave? They have guns and they know you don't!"

Remember, the first "plastic" knives were for undercover LEOs.

As for no weapons/knives at bars, well, what about that long walk home. Or the not-so-long but long-enough-for-trouble walk to the car? If you carry anything for self-defence (and I'm not saying you must) these are the times when you would need them the most.

They defintely have their place. In former years there were very few models to choose from, but here's a whole bunch. These are essentially back-up or last ditch defencive weapons, so one wouldn't dull the edges on utility chores.

Thanks for the link. I like 'em, can see myself getting a couple.

well when i go to clubs and bars, i don't go alone, its usually with a group of friends, and we call a taxi home.

the reasoning for that is, i have a bad temper. I'm the nicest guy in the world, but after a few drinks it's pretty easy to piss me off and I don't want to get into a bar fight and in a drunken stupor think that the karambit in my waistband will teach that fool a lesson.

I'd definately try out the jugle dart and possibly one of the push blades. If these knives are stronger than zytel theyd definitely get the job done though not as well as a conventional knife. I'm guessing that the whole idea behind these knives is that they are lighter and easier to conceal. They are of course purely back up knives.

Bought 2 of those FGX Push Blade II models from my local knife dealer last night. I have to tell you that I like them :) They're light, pretty sharp and you just gotta love the rubber (kraton) grips on a plastic knife. The only thing i did was remove those metal rings attached to the handles as they were just in the way.

Would this be my first choice knife, of course not, but it sure is interesting and reasonably priced.

They're fun to play with while watching tv, and they certainly can be used as a weapon but generally speaking, they are fun toys.

Interesting, Andre. Now I'd like to handle one if I see any at a local store or show. I do wonder if it isn't possible to put a fairly sharp edge on one, even if it doesn't last long, which it really doesn't need to since these knives of course aren't designed to be utility knives.

I have the large, Gerber Mk1-looking dagger (FGX Boot Blade I) and the smaller push dagger, FGX Push Blade II; got them from SelfDefenseGear. Good guys to deal with.
I bought them as throwaways to leave around the house and cars. (right...like you've never done that... does Choate Knife and Tool ring any bells? Executive Letter Opener, anyone?)
This evening I was knifesturbating with the FGX BB I while watching TV and decided that if I were to maybe someday have to use them as backup they'd better be tough enough to "kill the coffee table" (cheap Ikea stuff, but still as bit more of a challenge than denim/leather) so drove it about 2" deep with one mighty blow. Ta-Da!!! (Hey, sometimes its just plain fun to be impulsive) Anyway, nothing broke, including my hand, to which I offer much thanks to the designers of the handles, which are well constructed of a rubber(y) material that fits average-sized hands well and is both slip- and shock-proof. No complaints there.
But...they're def. 1-use weapons. The blade held up to a bit of lateral movement as I was trying to yank the bugger free and cover the hole up with a magazine before Mrs. J came back from the bathroom, but that ended up leaving deep indents in the blade. Kinda like serrations, but dull.
Later I ended up snapping the tip off with my Spidey-strength at the indent points to test the strenth after damage; but hey, for 10 bucks, why not?
I ordered more. Too bad they don't offer a sheath, but that's easy to solve with cardboard and 100mph tape.
Overall, I'd say ignore the snobs and buy some to save money on Band-Aids while in the clumsy, learning stages. Have fun but don't forget that they can be real weapons.
