Hey guys,

I am looking for a knife to strap to my shoulder strap when im backpacking and camping. I need something small but big enough to be sturdy in my hand. I wanna be able to beat the hell out of it and have it be sharp and solid. Needs to click secure in its sheath. I have narrowed it down to the Cold Steel Pendlton Mini Hunter and Ka Bar Becker Necker BK 11.

Comments suggestions opinions all appreciated

I really like my BK-11. Sturdy, good steel, full flat ground, made in USA, and it has a bottle opener. With a paracord wrap it's really an excellent knife. I heard about some sheath problems with the earlier "tanto" sheath, but mine is the newer style sheath and it works very well. The handle is a little small, but I don't mind. If you want the bigger handle, look at the BK-14.

I keep a Tom Krein designed Boker Pocket Bowie on the shoulder strap of my back pack and it works real well for its purpose.--KV

I personally keep a mora 612 on my shoulder strap but if your choices are between those two I'd go bk11. 1095 over aus 8 anyday for a fixed blade. as to the sheath rattle, my friend put some sheet Styrofoam in there, which has solved the problem, just make sure to wipe it down before putting it away.

I would go with the Pendleton Mini Hunter, if you want just for cutting. I would go with the BK-11 if you want to pry and beat on the knife.

great help guys, BK 11 is leading the race.

Should i get those attatchment scales for the handle or is paracord fine?

also am i hearing it right that Cold Steel is not all its cracked up to be? because i was thinking of buying one (SRK) for the blade and making a wooden handle for it to make a solid everything knife once i get more money one day

The micarta is roughly the same cost if the knife about $30. They make the knife feel great, but there isn't a NEED for them I guess. I love em, more than a paracord wrap, but that's me. Some love the cord. I just don't like needing to rewrap it after dirty gross work since paracord soaks stuff up

The Pendleton Mini is VG-1, and that has it's advantages. The secure-ex sheath has good retention, but wearing one upside-down would end up in a lost knife sooner that later. I carried it on my belt and in pocket for a few months as a general utility knife. It's quite capable. There isn't really enough real estate on a mini to "beat the hell" out of it. The BK11 is quite a bit bigger. Sounds like it would be a better fit.

Jeez, Clich, you could at least invite the guy over to look at some of the threads in the BKT forum, I think we got a couple.

Gfranchi, welcome to Bladeforums.

Good choice on the 11 but I prefer the 14, it feels more solid in my hands (med/lg). Same blade, just an a different handle.

Takes a good wrap too.
