Looking at buying my first big fixed blade and am stuck between a Cold Steel Trail Master carbon v or a Ranger RD9? What is the best choice. Thank's.

Thanks bearthedog, some cool photos. I think im leaning toward the RD9. How do you find the grip of the handle?

Definitely the RD9, they have an excellent warranty, even though you'll probably never need to use it. 5160 is really tough.

Ranger is a good company that makes good knives.

Cold Steel... well... if you can't say anything nice...

Welcome limber!

Just about everything you will hear about Ranger Knives and their maker is great. Excellent even.

The Trailmaster is no slouch however. If you like a rubber handle it is a great choice. It is also probably slightly less blade heavy (static balance-wise) and has a better point for penetration. And it too has a great reputation for toughness.

At the end of the day, I would probably go with Ranger. Especially seeing as you can have him customize the edge configuration for you. But I do love a good rubber handle. And the TM is a hell of a knife too

RANGER!!!

My RD7 is extremely tough. I have trouble making the edge not shaving sharp because it holds it so well. Justin does wonderful things with 5160 and will customize your blade any way you want for a very reasonable price. You also can't beat his service, which is the best in the industry.

Unconditional lifetime warranty, great customer service and nearly indestructible knives. How can you go wrong with Ranger?

Here is my RD7

RD9 is a great chopper, the Trailmaster is great for self defense, and good at slicing and can do some serious chopping too. I traded the RD9, kept the early version Trailmaster as it suited my needs for a do all knife. The RD9 is a great value and can easily be traded or sold if it doesn't work out for you.

Ah.... When you take a new one out of the box, the edge isn't dull.

(Ranger, definitely).

I am gonna say Ranger RD9 as well. I have a Trailmaster and I like the RD9 better all around.

I'll be the contrarian here - I prefer the Trailmaster. Both need their grinds thinned out, but once that's done, the TM pulls ahead, for me, due to weighting for chopping. I also find the blade geometry more useful for more tasks. My TM also holds it's edge longer.

I also own both and Ranger is my 1st choice. Handles can be modified and since I wanted primarily a cutter, I had the edge thinned.

Price is right and like others said, you can have mods done by Justin himself.

Are you serious? Ranger. Is this a trick question? if it is, then all i can say is, trick please! Go getchyo self a Ranger, you won't be sorry. I have a RD7 and a Recon Scout, and i think i could probably cut the Scout in two with the RD7. Rangers are some of the best blades on the planet. Ok diatribe over...

Hey Guys..

no Question..

RD9....

Awesome knife...
Best value for the money as far as I'm concerned...
