ok Does anybody have one? Rating?

Why did they suddenly run out of them (every site is out including CS)?

Was there a sudden surge in popularity?

If so why?
When did it first come out?

I had one, didn't even use it, I didn't like the feel of the Kraton handle and hilt and sub hilt. the knife felt all out of ballance.
Carbon V is one of the better steels Cold steel uses

all cs models in carbon v(trailmaster, master hunter, oss, uwk, etc) were made by camillus;when they went on strike 7 months ago, production stopped,& now everything made in carbon v is starting to disappear.they pulled their machinery out last month,so unless they find someone else to make 'em, it may be the end of carbon v.i hope they dont bring them back in a cheaper, crappy steel.:barf:

ah so thats what happened! ditto keep it in carbon V.
Any suggestions on a knife that is nearly equal in features and equal to or superior to the OSS?

In my oppinion Coldsteel knives were good in the 80's than put out junk over the last 15 years. It wasn't untill a about two years ago they started using better steel in there knives.
If you want something similer to the OSS without breaking the bank ckeck out Entrek knives the Sulhouette model has a sub-hilt and looks cool.

thats pretty nice, thanks! do they have a version where the backside is edge all the way down to the hilt? Dang 333 on amazon you found it at the best price nice!
whats the consensus of 440C; good, bad, excellent?

440C was one of the best steels you could get back in the 90's before all the super steels came out.
on a knife this size 440C would be very good in a stainless steel blade, its harder to chip, or break.
What are you planing on using this knife for ? Have you ever had a knife with a sub-hilt?

nope, but i did buy the trainer of the OSS and i like how it feels (its excellent since it works reversably in the "icepick" grip... aka "OJ" style)
Uses: well when i go hunting(if im so fortunate),home defense if need be,survival knife, "snake eater" knife, etc oh oh and my worst case scenrario kit knife

I have an OSS....not a bad knife. Overall I like it but with one issue: Balance. Its terrible. The knife doesn't feel "lively" in my hand.
I hear Lovett makes good knives, I might have to order one someday.

its too long a blade for skinning, get a shotgun for home defense, double edged knives aren't good survival knives, let the snake go ( you don't hurt it, it won't hurt you ).....
Your best bet, on my advice... get a good 6" to 7" blade your more likely to carry it and have it with you than a longer blade..
If I were you I'd get a Swamp Rat M6 or a Falkniven A1 they're good all purpose knives that you can beat, throw, hack, or chop anything ask anyone in the military special forces or police SAR the best survival knife would be a 6" to 8" blade 1/4" thick with a flat spine and a comfortable handle.
but thats my opinion..

oh no snake eater is a term, lol ive got no quirrel with snakes, its a term meaning(at least from Dale dyes usage, in referrence to Special forcces soldiers) meant the survialist types.
Got my tac blur to back it up and if need be my Ka-bar model KB1271(with ultra thick spine+ weight) but i think the OSS is well suited for the task as is that entrck which has a partial double edge
but ill take your advice to task and re-evaluate the tasks (and review solid proof :-] ) @ 56 bux ill find it hard to beat the OSS(at least if its available in carbon V again)

as for the gun, parents dont like it (we're moving before christmas to an even higher end neighborhood with, get this-- a police station adjacent to us AND friggin inmates play groud right behind us in the area below us)[we're elevated] so more than ever Im going to be pressuring them with the need of a fire arm- until then ill make due with what I can (at this point: a sword; several knives; 1000FPS using 12 gram rounds pellet rifle, that can pass for a .22 if worst comes to worst lol; hatchet; and a crappy machete with a high end one on the way...) lets just say Im a big fan of Murphy's Law

If your stuck on Coldsteel atleast look at the SRK -$55, Recon Scout -$100, and the Trailmaster -$120. look for the ones in carbon V
Don't let those "Solid Proof" videos brain was you rember it's just a commercial on a CD.
http://www.crocblades.com/index.cfm has all the knives in stock in carbon V including the OSS

A CS OSS in crappy 420 subquenched, I owned. Lightweight it was. Sharp? That too with flying colors. Handle? Urrg! Protection? Depends (The hand guard leaves much to be desired, just too wobbly for my liking). IMHO, the one weakness to look out. Simply hated the plastic sheath for making the entire package unnecessarily bulky. It carries fine though. The blade pattern being what it is, makes it a truly dedicated "fighter". Well, it's not for cutting down a tree it seems, but don't hold this against a fine knife pattern that was designed for a more specific end user. In all its a por' man's Bob Loveless inspired Black Bear (which BTW is what you should be looking at). If you're not "headed for the hills", what possible reason would you, to own one? Other than the fact that its another one of those Cold Steel gems. Yeehaw!

I did but i hate the uncoated blade (gives me away and can blind me among other things, i know its not coated since its stainless but still, i like to see what im cutting while in the sun) wish the OSS had metal guards though too
so you got yours before it came in carbon V ?

how long ago did you get this? (im curious as to how long the OSS has been on the market-- wikipedia needs to be fleshed out by you guys with information on knives!)

You put a steel gaurd on a OSS, you have a Black Bear and you just trippled the price...:thumbdn:

Off hand? I'ld say 'bout anywhere between 3 to 5 years ago. Or was that before 9/11??! (sorry! thinking aloud). Nope can't nail it without first checking "dear diary". Hope this helps.
