okay so im getting a new machete. i like the panga style it works best for survival and such in my type of terrain(south florida/carribean tropics) the sharp tip is perfect for poking holes in coconuts and shelling crabs. ive been looking at the cold steel panga, i have no experience with cold steel machetes are they as good quality as they say?

also does anyone know of a thicker panga style machete out there? like maybe 4mm/3/16 ?

Cold Steel machetes are of decent quality, and are manufactured by Lasher Tools of South Africa. Their handles are on the large size, and so are best for those with medium-to-large hands (I have small hands so they're too big for me) and they come with an extremely rough hollow grind with no actual edge to speak of. The grind is simply there to help speed up the sharpening process for the end user. The steel is a little softer than that found in models by other major makers like Tramontina or Imacasa. For those that want one ready to go out of the box, I carry some in my shop that have been given the necessary elbow grease to get them in good shape.

You won't really find anything that thick in the panga style to the best of my knowledge--4mm is really quite thick for a machete. It's not common to find most traditional patterns any thicker than 1/8" (3mm)
