Cold Steel Pocket Bushman: Facts

That's amazing. I did a mini review of this knife a few months back, but this blows it out of the water. Very good to know these things. I'll be giving mine to my old lady's dad who works for PG+E and will definitely be getting use from it. I'll show him this video too.

I took this knife apart... don't do that! It's frigging impossible to put it back together with your bare hands. The spring was also slighty deformed already (only had it for three weeks now and light use). I really don't understand what that jimp in the spring hole is for since it makes it weaker.

I was excited about this knife, but like Achilleus, it has it's knee and one big flaw it is. Once again, I get the lesson by harshest way to avoid cold steel. :(

As Andrew Demko mentioned in the video, it was there because it was easier to blank properly during the manufacturing process, since it's difficult to blank a narrow channel that long. Also as stated, they've since realized it was a mistake and have gone to great lengths to find a way to blank a standard channel. All new Pocket Bushman will have the corrected spring channel.

I disliked mine so much that I gave it away to another forum member. The thread was in the Knife Reviews forum.

What's the length "X" below ?..frame to tip?

Trying to avoid the policeman-with-a-tape-measure maximum of 4.5"...gotta stay legal, don't you know. :)

I know the specs say "4.5", but is that a frame-to-tip measure or a "sharpened length, beyond the ricasso"?

If the specs say blade length it should be frame to tip; if they say edge length it is only the sharpended portion. However if the blade length limit is 4.5 inches I would chose a smaller knife, because if it is right at that line a LEO might still call it illegal.

Is there a way to tell the improved design knives from the old ones? I still want to get one of these, but if there is an improved design out there, I may as well make sure I get that one.

Roger that...me too!
Somebody who's got the new/improved design check out the tang-stamp/box/package/paperwork for the telltale info.
And tape measure the frame-to-tip blade length.

We're standing by... :)

I just measured mine and X in the photo measured 4 3/8s inches...

I have no complaints about mine and would recommend one to anybody who treats a knife correctly.

I wouldn't say I broke my knife at any part per se, but I have never been abusive to knives (not even batoning) and seeing that spring being bent a little already... :barf:

Bump hoping someone has info about how to tell the improved design from the old ones w/o taking the knife apart.

I have a Pocket Bushman arriving tomorrow and would also be interested in knowing when this improved version became available, and is there any way to know what version a person has. I'm not really worried about the one coming in failing since I probably would not use it hard, just like the design and size.

Only way to tell would be to take it apart. That's not the hard part, getting it back together with that spring is though.

Dang! Now I want one! I've been wavering but after seeing that video I've gotta get one.

you do not have to take it apart.

look at the pictures in posts #9,10 & 13. see the holes in the handle that the pocket clip attaches with?
in a well lit area, you can use the (2) two holes closest to the spine of the handle to determin if you have the new design or the older design.

if the hole closest to the handle spine is dark and when the lock is pulled open the reflection is lost in the midde mounting hole, then you have the older design.
no reflection= old design. reflection present= new design.

all told it takes about five seconds to figure it out.

I have the older design.

hope this discription was easy to understand and that it helps, enjoy!
