Mine came with too big a shaft, or too small a head. The head won't go down on the shaft. I tried to put it on and now it is jammed on the shaft. How should I get it off?
How should I thin the shaft?
And. after all that, how the heck am I supposed to assemble this thing? Do it require pow'r tools?

I found a couple of threads on this on other forums, but no specific information on mounting.
Just looking at the thing, I would think you could take several tacks.
First, carefully sand the shaft so it's a snug fit, then consider using hardware store wedges (like the ones that hold axe or maul heads on. You'll probably have to saw a slot for same.

Or...Cross-drill the head and use rivets. That would be more authentic; most of the historic specimins you see have a riveted construction.

Jim mine came the same way. Here is what I did for the entire post go here

I used the the ash pole it came with but cut it down to 4'. The pole did have a twist in it but I was able to plane it out. The mounting is very robust. At least on mine the last 2" of the socket (top section where axe and hammer are) has a slightly smaller ID then the lower section (with two mounting holes) that has been added on. Plane the handle to fit the lower section then drive the handle on (with a block of wood and hammer) and drill and install screws. I ended up with a very tight fit.
