cold steel question

Hi Guys,
I recently bought a cold steel recon scout second hand.
However I notice that nowhere on the knife does it say Cold Steel.
I think its quite an old model as it came with the Codura sheath not a kydex or leather one.
My question is, have any of you guys heard of any cold steel knives that are unmarked in this way. Or have I been sold a dodgy item!
Also what do you think of CS knives in general. I have seen some bad comments about them in some of the forums. I always thought they were pretty good ?

At Cold Steel's website on their Q & A section I found this:

Q: Do all Cold Steel knives come with a sheath?

Most of our fixed blade models come with sheaths; they are either made of Concealex, Secure-Ex, Cordura, or Leather.

Notice they mention Cordura. Also, I know Cold Steel makes good knives. Your knife, if it is made out of AUS-8 steel (which as far as I know all Recons are made out of) it is a fine speciman that should serve you well.

Compare your knife to these:

Make sure, when comparing it, to count the # of screws, pins, indentantions, etc. Another company can't make an exact copy. Report back, and let us know what you figure out.

Cold Steel makes good knives. You'll generally get consensus that their fixed blades provide excellent performance at a reasonable price. I really like a number of their fixed blades. You'll often hear people opine that their folders don't quite live up to the excellent value of their fixed blades, which is a sentiment I agree with. In my opinion -- and it's just one person's opinion -- their folders range from "good" to "dude, are you serious?", but none quite match the excellence of their best fixed blades.

On top of that, many of us are a bit irritated about the ATC thing. That should have no effect on the opinion of their knife quality though.

Joe,

What is the ATC thing? I agree that the Carbon V fixed blades are great. Even if CS doesn't make them, they are smart enough to sell them.

Kiri, The knife you describe sounds exactly like my Recon Scout 2nd that I bought directly from Cold Steel. It also came with a cordura sheath.

Check out the American Tomahawk Company forum.

It has to do with what is considered a very unethical usage of the above name by Cold Steel on their line of inferior Tomahawks.

Re: Fixed blade quality, I agree with Joe, inspite of the above controversy, the 'bang for the buck' quotient is very high.

The only Cold Steel knives I have are some Voyagers (large and medium) and a spear-pointed 3" bladed neck knife (forget the name). They are good knives...the Voyagers are not "sexy" and are a bit boxy...certainly not as comfortable as the Spydie Endura. But they are very functional, esp. the clip points. Also extremely solidly made. Mine are the older ones with the plastic clips.

I have not done much more than a cursory examination of their new folders. IMO, most of their fixed blades are excellent. THey also come out with interesting items such as the Sjamboks. What I do feel puzzled about is why would Cold Steel advertise cheap Chinese(?)-made SAK knockoffs? They stated that SAK's are useful but too expensive (??) to use or possibly lose in the field(??). The real deal Victorinox's are definitely NOT overly expensive and are hundreds of times better than any Chinese copies.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I have managed to solve my query. I got back to the guy who sold it to me and have found that it is a genuine Cold Steel knife, it is unmarked because it was a pre production prototype he obtained from a knife show about 8 months before it came in to production. This pleases me as it adds to the collectabilty of the item IMHO.
Apparently factory seconds either have the cold steel logo with a line of xxxxx above or have a 2 on the butt of the handle.
I am also reassured that their carbonV fixed blades are good quality.
Where is a good place to get a hawk by the way ?
Also does anyone have one of those special forces shovels and are they any good ?

Cheers
Kiri
