Hey guys, so I'm new to knives and for some reason, I have my eye set on the Cold Steel Recon 1 knives.

Debating between either the Clip, Tanto or Spear and whether I should get a plain or combo edge (Don't want full serrated).

Probably gonna be just for everyday carry or self-defense? Haven't really decided, but just thought having one will be handy.

Oh and anyone know the law in Canada (specifically Ontario) in regards to carrying a folding knife?

Thanks for any and all your help.

In Canada, it is illegal to carry a knife or any other item for self defense purposes. If you carry a knife in Canada, it must purely be for utility purposes...and for utility purposes, anything goes, at least on paper, as long as it's not an auto, gravity knife, or push dagger. In practice, anything deemed "too scary" is likely to get you in trouble if Mr. LEO finds out about it.

That said, for utility purposes, a spear or clip point is better, generally speaking. The tanto was designed purely for use as a weapon. It does have its utility purposes, and features a stronger, reinforced tip, at least as designed by Cold Steel.

Which one to get? I prefer clip points over spear points most of the time. But I'm carrying a superb spear point from Cold Steel right now as I type this. They're both great. Pick which one is more attractive to you.

In Canada it is and always is a sharp edged tool.
It won't harm anyone on its own whether in your pocket or on your belt.
Don't show it around or brag about what you can or could do with it..
Basically if you're going to bring attention to yourself then you probably shouldn't have one.
I have carried my Hatamoto and my original Master Tanto since I bought them when they were released with no problem from any leo department.
Yes. I live in Canada and I get out in the public eye everyday.
No ones ever questioned me about it.
It is good to know that the cs tanto edge will go through a kevlar bullet proof vest should you ever come upon one that needs a trim..
I prefer the tanto point but I do have 50/50 serrated because you never know when you'll need them.
*I got off topic abit at first*

Recon 1 is a great knife. I picked up the spear point, simply because, for me, it has a stonger tip than the clip point and better looks than the tanto. Plain edge all the way!!!! For us Canadians though, its only illegal if a police officer can "flick" it open. There are no laws governing blade length.

ive had the ultra lock version of spear and tanto, and a friend with the clip. a cold steel combo edge is essentially fully serrated. there is barely any plain edge on the knife. i havnt been able to pick a new ultra lock model yet. the older hotamoto tanto style i liked more, or else id get one.
i currently have the mirco in spear point :)

I originally had a clip point for a while (got a good deal on it) and gave it away to a friend. Nothing wrong with it -- I just wanted a spear pointed Recon 1 because I like spear points better.
