I'm looking for a bette lock-blade then I have now. I have narrowed my choices to a Recon 1 or a Flash 2. Any recommendations?

If you have small hands do not get the recon 1. The recon 1 has a stronger lock, but the SOG is lighter, has assisted opening, and is imo a better edc knife. I'd probably go with the Flash 2 just because it's more fun to play with!

All SOG knives I have handled, including several flash 2's, all had play, and I can't deal with that.

Recon 1 is a workhorse, and one of my favorite knives of all time, so it is pretty obvious what my vote would be for.

Verisharp, FYI they have a mini now in 3", so size should not be a problem

SOG= Blade play

Cold Steel= Aggressive image

If I had to pick I would get the Recon. It may not be as friendly of an EDC, but used responsibly there should be no problem.

I don't think so. You can get a spear point 3" version, and then it is easy to remove the black coating and it is as tame as a mini-griptilian

it really depends on what you're gunna do but, for generic EDC type usage a thinner blade would be better, unless you need to pry and in essence have a sharpened prybar, then go cold steel

I have a few expensive knives but I always take my recon 1 to work with me..great beater knife

+1 here, I feel the exact same way. SOG for some reason doesn't do so well on their knives that are liner-less (which the Flash is). A little side to side is a given on assisted openers, but the up and down play that frequents these SOG's just irritate me. I've had a couple of the Flash's and an Aegis and they all developed up and down play very quickly after a little use. I have other 'lined' SOG's that are great knives though, like the X-Ray and Pentagon, but I now stay away from anything SOG makes without liners.
The CS Recon is tried and true and is a workhorse that can take abuse, it's also available in different blade styles and lengths. Of the 2 you mentioned my vote is for the Recon all the way....

I would also say recon 1, i have had many flashes and they all had crazy blade slop:barf:
because it is linerless many of the parts had many durability problems.

Of the two definitely the Recon 1. I have the clip point version that had the coating removed and I love it. They do make a smaller version now and a spear point blade as well. For the full size to be as big as it is it rides well in the pocket. Just to throw out another option (I dont have one yet but I will be getting one soon) is the Cold Steel American Lawman.

I agree with the others who have mentioned the SOG blade play. I held 2 different ones at a local brick and mortar and both had play right out of the box. I'm not saying all are, but after reading there are many people who talk about the play that SOG folders tend to have. I do like the look of some of them but I would buy the Recon 1 or American Lawman hands down.

just to throw another Cold Steel in the mix, consider the AK47.

I would go with any of those three CS (Recon, Lawman or AK47). stay away from the SOGs.

While the Recon 1 is beefier and stronger - by a wide margin - I would take the Flash II for EDC. But I am counter culture on this one. I just find the Sog to be more friendly in the pocket with its deep carry clip, a better slicer with it full flat grind, and more fun and easy to flick open with its assisted opener. I'll take the Recon 1 for the rough stuff, as its a hard core folder, but for average everyday usage I like the Flash II. And thats not to say the Flash II can't do the dirty work. I recently took down several 1" saplings with the Flash II with no prob.

Flash 2, because FIRST is the worst, SECOND is the best, and THIRD is the something something something. :D

It's got nothing to do with it not having liners. The Cold Steel doesn't have liners, a lot of older spydercos were linerless. It's more just poor tolerances.
