Does anybody have an opinion on the cold steel recon 1 tanto? are they any good or are they just hype?

a co-worker of mine bought one, awhile back. he got the clip point, but it's the same knife - Recon 1

he couldn't be happier with his. says it takes an edge pretty easily and retains it well under hard use. he said he's totally confident in the lock, alot of other folders make him nervous, but not this one.

he's had the knife for a couple years now. he said he'd recommend it to anyone considering it.

I like mine a lot, the textured G10 scales are very grippy. I have always liked their AUS8 steel, it's not the best out there but you get a lot of knife for the money.

My only gripe is that the teflon coating isn't the most durable thing they could have used, tungsten DLC would have been nice.

I had a Recon 1 spear-point wit G-10 scales. Very nice big folder. The lock is strong & easy to use. Felt very good in the hand. For the money, I can't think of another knife that compares to it.

I have one of the zytel ones. I bought it in 2001 and one of the lock
springs broke in 2006 after it being my edc for that time. Pulled one out of my AK-47 and it works like a champ now.

Good knife overall, holds a good edge, but the zytel is a little slick. The new
ones with the g-10 look pretty good but I wouldn't pay over maybe $45.
You can get a Kershaw Lahar for about $50 but if you want a BIG folder
for low cost you can't go wrong....

There's an excellent review of this knife by Funditor

For me this knife's exceptional exterior appearance and finish is not an indicator of the quality of it's interior parts as I have discovered when I took the knife apart for a cleaning.

Below is a picture of the Steel liners where the slots for the Ultra lock.

The Recon 1 is one of my favorite knives. Mine is old 440A blade with the Zytel-steel reinforced frame. What impresses me is the balance and speed in opening, plus the sharpness of the knife is astoundingly sharp and is easily resharpened when necessary.

Cold Steel's steel selection may not be up to the standards of some, but I'll go so far as to say that their heat treatments and materials are consistently decent. With some knives (won't mention any names, but one's initials are CRKT!), quality can vary from knife to knife. In short, it's a decent knife.

i have a clip point earlier version and i have a new g-10 tanto version
I love the grippy of the g-10 and the strength of the lock and tanto
design for the price you can't go wrong

I like mine. The G10 makes it grippy.

Only complaint, I like to carry in the waistband. If I'm proned out in the bushes with a rifle or in an odd position for too long, it kind of gets uncomfortable. The butt of the handle is very pointy and digs in to my gut.

Thanks for the information everybody. I ordered the tanto tip and partial serrated edge, and so far am very impressed with it. the only thing i don't like is how easy the finish comes off other than that I would recommend the knife to anybody.

I can't believe I've not chimed in yet. Well, I like my Recon 1 Tanto knive. I've put it to use lightly and have been happy so far. This is a pretty decent blade.

"i wish they made the spear point version in full plain edge instead of only combo edge"

I have the same wish...I even wrote to CS to as if they have plans to sell a PE in a near future... They did not even answer me.
I have the Recon-1 tanto point....It is a strong, sharp and good quality folder.

I've got to say that I prefer the Zytel grips over the G10. The Zytel are smooth and nice, but the G10 stocks are just too abrasive for my taste. I've also found the 440A blade on the earlier knife to be surprisingly good. Takes a nice, sharp blade and keeps it beautifully. Naturally, I'd rather have an AUS8A blade, but the difference isn't as much as I thought it would be.

I've also found the Recon 1 to be smooth, strong and ultra-reliable. I really don't want to pay more so they polish out the inconsequential blemishes mentioned by Razorburn. That steel merely fortifies the strength of the knife, and those blemishes will neither affect the strength or the functioning of the knife.

I'd recommend it to anyone.
