cold steel recon 1 vs triple action

i am looking for a heavy duty work knife, ( i collect knives here and there, but they are all cheap knives, nothing to brag about.) i have never spent more than $30 on a knife, and my normal heavy duty work knife is now no longer stable, (bolts are fallin out of the handle, and the blade play is horrible.) am got a triple action double bladed at a gun show for $40 (one heck of a steal!) but i wanted it to be a work knife, but it is illegal to carry, (double blades) and so i sold it for $70 (stole it and flipped it!) i am now looking at gettin the triple action tanto point. But when i held the double bladed triple action, the cover of the handle was loose. the thumbstud on the cover could be thightend, which i ded, but i realized it would contuaslly wear to cover down, and it will never hold on to the handle. the other knife i looked into is the cold steel recon 1. i like the tanto blade, but the handle lock, is not my favorite type of lock, and the pocket clip is small, curved, and not attractive at all, while the triple action is almost all about looks. from your personal experiense with knives, whih one do you think is better, and will last longer?

The Recon 1 is a much better knife and with the Tri-Ad lock is likely the strongest on a folder right now.

I have a tanto partially serrated Recon 1. LOVE IT. Locks up firm and tight and keeps an edge. LOVE IT.

Forget the Triple Action. Not durable, the pivot works itself loose in the soft aluminum handle. The old and the new Recon 1 have a reputation for being strong knives.

Kershaw, Benchmade, and SOG also make tanto folders at least as good as Cold Steel.

CS American Lawman or Recon-1. I own an AL and love it, but I swear my hands are still growing. I'm now waiting for the Recon-1 p/e clip point I ordered to arrive. The Recon has a slightly longer handle. Either knife you can't go wrong with. My only nitpick is I wish I could get these knives with D2 steel. I don't have the $ to order a Demko custom. Yet. :)

OK, I just received my clip-point p/e Recon-1 and WOW! What a helluva knice knife! :D My fingers barely fit the finger grooves when grabbed tightly, but it's more comfortable than the American Lawman. I think I'm going to really, really like the Recon-1. Either way you can't go wrong.

I just picked up a Recon 1 Tanto plain edge and it's great! Very solid in all aspects. My only issues were the edge was quite uneven, so I resharpened it at 25* and it's very sharp and durable. Also, over time the handles grip wears away, and sometimes the lock jams while closing it. I'll send it back if it continues. You can go wrong with it, but there's tons of choices out there.

Is that the older Recon-1 with the Axis type of lock? I can't see how the newer Tri-ad lock system could jam up.

I suggest if your looking to get a hard work knife go with the recon 1, but try and get your hands on one of the older models, the newer ones are lighter and use a lockback mechanism which i really dont like but hey you might right? :) so whichever you prefer, ive had mine for a while a recon 1 tanto with a partially serrated blade which ive carried while working construction and ive cut through almost anything, including snapping metal bands that held the pallets of tile down. the triple action tanto is a knife ive been trying to get forever but it is not a hard use knife like the recon. My suggestion for you, get them both, the recon for when your working and the triple action for when your out and about. or get both to see which one you like and then sell me the triple action :) good luck

Here's another post for the Cold Steel Triad locking knives. I've owned the AK47, both recons and the American lawman. They are all awesome. The triad voyagers are due to be released this year as well. I plan on picking up a few for sure.

LOL up from the grave!
The Recon 1 is a great knife, I prefer the bowie over the tanto but both work well.
Try the American Lawman if you want smaller, Spartan if you want larger.

I second the Spartan. The stock grip is ugly as hell and I can't stand the blade shape but that can be modded.

I've heard so many good things about the CS triad lock that I have to pick one up for myself. Right now I am split between the Recon 1 tanto version and the American Lawman.

I know there have been many threads on this comparison but I wanted to bring up the issue of tips. From the pictures I have seen, both the Lawman and Recon 1 (tanto) look to have delicate points. For those who own both, is there any thickness difference between points and if so, which one looks 'tougher', if at all?
