i just got a cold steel recon 1 the verson made in taiwan with a zytel handle and wanted to know if the newer g-10 handles could go on it? also is there any difrence except for the handle meterial and more blade shapes? are their serations that bad, i heard they chip off very easly. thanks in advance!

The old Recon 1s have a different lock, and the handle shape is totally different to the new ones. The scales won't be interchangeable. Ordering one of the new Recon 1s will be a lot easier than trying to get scales that look like the new ones but fit one of the old models.

Besides using the Tri-Ad lock, the new models don't have steel liners which makes them a lot lighter. The pocket clip is also better. I'm not a huge fan of the new handle shape for utility purposes, it has a kind of guard that keeps my hand too far from the blade (probably a plus if SD is part of your needs).

Cold Steel serrations aren't the best, and I've seen plenty of their knives with damaged serrations (usually the tips of the smaller "teeth"). They were all used rather hard, though. I only have one serrated Cold Steel knife that I bough more for the novelty factor than anything else (a Vaquero Grande). I've used it on thick rope, bottles, cardboard and food, so far it's held up OK.

thanks Franciscomv for help on the serations, but there is a gen not the 2010 ones with tri ad locksbut the ones before, their like the ones with the ultra lock but the handels are zytel and i belive one generation before...their handles are the same shape.

I bought an old school Recon 1 tanto from the PX after I came home from the war. It had G10 scales. Wasn't really impressed. Gave it to my (fire team) M203 guy. I don't remember if that knife was Japan or Taiwan.

I know which ones you mean, I've got one of the G-10/Ultra-lock Recon 1s. The scales are held by screws, so in theory one could take them off and fit them onto the zytel handled Recon 1s (it might take some sanding). But, IMHO, finding the scales is going to be more difficult than just buying the whole knife. AFAIK, Cold Steel doesn't sell spare parts.

You are talking about a fifty something dollar knife. Just buy a new one with the improved lock and keep the old one like it is. At least that's what I'd do.
