I don't know anything about Cold Steel. But I have Emersons.

Which one is better and why?

Im happy with my recon. Don't have any Emerson's though.

The Recon 1 is the stronger knife, with a much stronger lock, and it's not chisel ground. If you know how to sharpen a knife, it also won't really matter that the AUS8's edge retention isn't as good as 154CM.

How about a SOCFK? I love Emersons but the 7 didn't fit like a glove (to me) like the rest of them. The SOCFK looks to have a more comfortable handle.

I also like how Emerson's tanto has a nice subtle drop to it as opposed to the Recon's straight lines.

Both solid knives no doubt.

Another option. Why not a Grip tanto? Still US made, no chisel ground, much stronger lock than the emerson, and if the plastic molded scales are a bother you can get aftermarket ones and still come in around the price of the emerson, though maybe a bit more. Another cool option for a large tanto is a Hogue EX-01. Same steel as the emerson, US made, and much better F&F.

Looks can be deceiving. I own both and the socfk handle is not nearly as comfortable as the 7 for my large mitt.

I like Cold Steel knives well enough, but if finances allow it I will choose Emerson every time, and as long as you don't go a spine whackin' yer knifes, a liner lock is both fine and dandy!
Someone already mentioned American made, and the wave / bottle opener is cool too, and oh yeah, the chisel ground tanto is freaking awesome.

I like emerson, but if the lock back doesnt bother you the coldsteel is fine too, I however never fully warmed up to my Recon 1 and it just became my beater.

Cold Steel Recon: If you want hard use capability. If you just need it for general utility then just pick which one you like best.

Cold Steel folders designed by Andrew Demko are not as glamorous as many others but they are some of the strongest folders on the market no matter what price range you are shopping.
