Cold Steel Recon Scout

Dunno about the recon scout, but there's a few people around here who really like the Trail Master, which is a bigger version. For $70ish, and a 7.5" blade, there are some, IMO, better alternatives such as the Rat7 ($110ish), Ranger 7 ($100ish), or KaBar $50ish.

I put a lot of miles on an older Carbon 5 Recon Scout. That thing took a lot of abuse too. The rubber handle finally cracked and fell apart, I think I traded it as is, but it would have been perfect with a Micarta handle on it. As for a sheath, get a kydex one from Survival Sheath System or On Scene Tactical, you'll have a great knife/sheath combo then.

About 15 years ago, I was attending the Los Angeles Gun Show at the L.A. Fairgrounds, in Pomona. Cold Steel had a number of tables set up with their products.

I picked up a new "second" Recon Scout. Looked and looked for flaws but could find none. I showed it to Lynn Thompson and asked him what was wrong with it that it was designated a "second?"

He looked at it for a moment and then pointed to a tiny blemish in the grind line on the top of the blade. He said, "See that? That's why it's a "second." I bought it for $60 and have had nothing but good results from it. Believe me, I've used it HARD! The handle is still in good shape, on mine.

So... that's my experience with the Cold Steel Recon Scout. It stays in my truck, and when I go camping, etc., it's used for whatever rough jobs I need.

i had one once. i ended up selling it for money reasons but it was an excellent knife. tough as an anvil. chopped like an axe (once i reprofiled the edge), and no matter what i did or tried, i could not break the darn thing! i highly recomend it!,,,VWB.

It's a thick sharpened crowbar.

I kid I kid. :D

Not a big fan of Cold Steel but they have a few products, that for the money, are hard to beat. The Recon Scout is one of them. When my little brother was deployed to Afghanistan for the second time I needed to pick him up a decent, inexpensive fixed blade that was an all around knife that fit the most categories for use. He beat the hell out of that knife and he still owns it today.

Keep in mind, I own and buy knifes 3 to 5 times as expensive as this knife. Both my brother and I know our way around a knife and he had nothing but good things to say about its performance.

Having said that, I do not consider a Recon Scout a woods knife honestly. Falls just short of a full size chopper in my opinion. I think woods knife I think a Bravo-1 or a Fallkniven A1 ....or Koster Knives new bushknife.

For a mid sized blade its great, and if you can afford SanMai..then thats the way I would go. And if the handle gives out, get someone to do a leather washer set up...I saw one done like that and it was awesome. Gene

I have had a Trailmaster carbon V for quite some time but I did't use it very much due to it's size ....now Recon Scout is a very nice size knife and can be used in the woods for wood an camp kitchen also.

Used to have Carbon V but now I own one San Mai :)
