Cold Steel Recon Spear Point

Recently Cold Steel came out with the new Recon Spear Point folder, a 4" Aus8 blade with the triad lock.

I needed a 4" user knife with a strong lock to keep in my car and at work, and this thing is perfect for that role. It's my first and only CS folder, and the triad lock is extremely impressive. No side-to-side play, absolutely solid lockup, blade perfectly centered between handles on closing. Only complaint--minor--is that when new, the blade lock is SO stiff it's hard to get it closed.

The spear point blade profile, at 0.135" thick, is an excellent improvement on this series, for Cold Steel. I've never liked tanto blades, no offense to anyone but to me they always feel rather useless and "mall ninja." But with the 4" spear point blade, and the strong triad lock, this folder becomes incredibly useful, more like a lightweight field blade that can do 90% of a fixed blade's tasks (yet can still be compact and easily hidden as a folder). One thing about the blade grind, it's a hollow grind I think, and I would have preferred a FFG, but not a big deal. As with most CS blades I hear about, it's extremely sharp right out of the box, though I can do better on my DMT stones.

Besides the blade and lock, the best thing about the Recon is the grip shape. The grips are thin, but the sculpted shape seems to fit my larger hands really well, better than most of my Micarta folders which often end up feeling slippery. Looking forward to putting this thing to work.

I was excited to see this too. I'm still holding out some hope that they will do a 'high end' version of these folders with san mai steel and ti bolsters. Would be sweet!

How is the tip of the blade? Is it strong or does it look delicate?

If I had time I'd give you more photos, but at least the tip doesn't appear "fragile" to me in the sense of prone to breakage. Obviously that's a very subjective opinion, I haven't yet field tested this blade, and since it's a folder, I'm not going to throw it or hammer it into a stump and jump up and down on it. It does taper down to the tip, starting from the 0.135" thickness on the spine, so tip is somewhat thinner steel.

I am SO glad they came out with thing model in the spear point: I honestly like it better than some of my more expensive folders. Lock is stronger, grip is better. My ONLY concern, really a minor one, is that I don't much carry for hollow grinds. And I agree with Buff: if they come out with it in a higher end steel, it would make this blade hard to resist.

I can see your point about the hollow grinds, but both CS and Buck have used them for a very long time, so far, I haven't had a problem with them, although I too prefer FFG. How is the G10 on the handle? I had to sand my AK down under the clip as it was wearing my jeans away at an alarming rate. :D

You really can't beat the triad lock.

Thanks for the informative review.

I wonder if there are any Triad locks that aren't tight. Sorry to say, it looks like my Mini Lawman will never be easy to open.

I'm liking the spear point... never really into their tanto or clip points, and previously they only offered Spear Point in half-serrated.
So now finally they get a plain edge spear point!!

I was interested in the recon series a couple years ago and the only one I really took a shine to was the spear point.....except for the serrations, I don't like them and really do not like the CS serrations compared to spyderco's.
So I went with a lawman even though choils are not my thing, good knife but if the spear straight edge was available back then it would have been in my pocket.

The G10 on the handle is very rough, so I will prob take the tip of sanding it down under the clip, in case I decide to carry this.

My triad lock was SO tight that I was flipping the blade and somehow it didn't get open, it came back in a sort of awkward way and snapped on one of my fingertips, giving me a good-sized cut.

Moral of story, be careful flicking the blade on those tight new Recons.

That said, I still think this is an awesome blade. I wish they made these things in S30V or VG10. For $120 or so, I'd pay that to get this knife in VG10.

Ouch -- CS needs to lighten up with its Triad locks!

Oh wow, I though you were mistaken when you said spear point. That's a spear point all right. Definitely nice looking. I haven't received their new catalog yet, is the 12 out yet? Lynn said in the last one about price increases for this year, I hope not to drastic a jump, though I don't think I'll be buying any CS this year.

To those talking about how stiff the lockbar and the lock up of the recon 1 series and other knives that use the tri-ad. I've had my recon 1 clip point variation for around 3 months and with a few deployments a day it's openning and closing smooth as silk now. Just give it a little time to wear in some.

I have the "mall ninja" tanto point :) the knife is awesome. As mentioned above, the lock will ease up a bit. Aside from the recon I also have the spartan and both are very smooth. The spartan has become my car knife and the recon in my pocket.

Ya the locks lighten up after extended use, no biggy. All of mine lightened up after break in.

I think a lot of the break in process in these knives is allowing the black coating to wear off of the contact points of the locking mechanism. Mine smoothed up considerably after the coating wore a bit.

Looks and sounds like a good user that will shrug off rough treatment. Thanks for the review.

I just bought myself an inexpensive beater, and I'm kind of sorry I didn't know about the spear point Recon before I made my purchase.

I'm thinking about a spear point, It almost has the strength of a tanto and still has nice belly. And I really wish cs would at least use vg-10 in their folders, that'd be sweet.

I got the spear point recently and it is awesome. I put about an hour worth of work into this knife, stripping the teflon finish from blade and lockbar and sanding the G10 under the pocket clip. Now the knife looks sooooo much better, you should really consider this mod! The blade has a nice stonewash finish under the coating!

Many of us would love to be able to buy that knife.

Too bad Cold Steel doesn't aim those folders at enthusiasts on BF. Instead, the targeted customer is a Mall Ninja who thinks that black coating is cool.

I bought my spearpoint Recon 1 at a show. I really wanted a medium, clip point Voyager, mainly because of its stonewashed blade. But the locks were all so tight, I couldn't find one that didn't hurt my thumb.

So I have a Recon 1 that doesn't hurt me and a black coating I don't want.
