Is there any substantial difference between the Carbon V blade and the AUS 8 in this configuration? I can't imagine the Recon Tanto would have a wickedly sharp blade as the bulk of the blade would make it very difficult. And can Carbon V blades still be found among the children of men?

If so, where, and would they command a premium?

Thanks!

I don't think the Recon Tanto is offered in Aus8. The Carbon Vsteel model I bought for a friend was shaving sharp from the factory.

I don't know the difference between the carbon V and the SK-5 that they are making now.

I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter, purchased 1994 in Sweden. How would I know if I have a Carbon V or an AUS8 blade steel?

Can anyone here help me identify the steel?

A dab of lemon juice will discolor carbon steel, but not Stainless.

But you need not test. The use of AUS8 is a new development. (that is to say, within the last year). So if you have a 1994 Master Hunter, it is not AUS8.

So then it's carbon V for sure? Or could there be other options?

The blade sure looks stainless, and the guy at the store told me it was although he seemed somewhat clueless. His words were "The SRK will rust if you remove the black coating, but the Master Hunter is stainless". So I guess the SRK would be of carbon steel and the MH of some kind of stainless.

A qualified guess is that my MH was made in 1993-1994, it could have been warming the shelf for some time.

cold steel's carbon v knives were made by camillus. it's the same steel as the ethan becker knives used, i think. when camillus closed its doors, cold steel had to change its game plan. some knives went to sk-5, which previously was used in their bushman series, and others went to stainless steels like aus8 and 4116 krupp. i would have liked a recon tanto or srk in the 10XX.

Naw, Bushman's were fabricated from a sheet of SK-3.
SK-5 is much better.
In fact some older models of high carbon tool-steel SOG Knives were made of that material. So if you really wanna know how well it works, search out old SOG Knife reviews on the SOG S1 Bowie. The fact is, both SK-V and Carbon-V are prone to rusting if not treated well.
