Edit: New question: Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto Plain Edge vs Clip Point Plain Edge.

Also, If this means anything to anyone in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjfnRfyHAs4&feature=related
Nutnfancy explains at 16:08 that he used a recon tanto to baton a large piece of wood, but then later explains that he likes the clip point better. However, it seems that he only batoned to test the Recon 1's tri-ad lock, not the tanto blade version itself.

The recon 1 has a slightly longer blade. It will come down to your preference. Both are equally capable.

A clip point is more practical, IMO. You could slice bread with a Clip, with a Tanto, not so much.

I want an edc knife that can be used as a emergency defensive tool, as I cannot carry a firearm of any sort, NO EXCEPTIONS.

As an alternative I would recommend pepper spray/foam/gel; this way you avoid the messy logistics of trying to fend off an assailant with a knife--and the potential legal complications which could land you in prison.

Ok, but if I got the recon would you recommend tanto or clip point blade?

I find clip points more useful and the point on the recon 1 doesn't seem to much lesser in strength than a tanto. Also find sharpening an american tanto point knife more work than a clip point. Sharpening a tanto is like sharpening two knives. Combo edge tanto points are worse. It's like sharpening three knives. That's just me, though.

I prefer the tanto Recon I. A stronger tip seems appropriate for a hard use folder like the Recon. I just got one and I'm impressed with it. I first bought the American Lawman and that's nice too.

I like my modded Recon-1 best. I just hit it with the DMT's again last night, removed more of the front lower corner and stropped it. Cuts through flimsy receipt slips effortlessly.
