It is noticeably lighter but still has decent splitting mass on the smaller stuff.

That's probably a good guess. I cut the hammer off of my trail hawk and it dropped the weight by about 4 ounces.

What do you think of the Trail Hawk, before and after ? I almost got one but grabbed the Frontier and Rifleman.

It's much livlier now and it has a slight forward balance to it. I like it a lot but I don't really use it for camping chores. I cut the hammer and the handle down so it was easier to throw in a day pack for when I want to take a carving project on the go. I use it to remove a lot of material like on spoon handles and such. I think it weighs about 14-15 ounces with the handle.

Edit: I realized I only answered half the question. When chopping with the trail hawk before I cut it down I noticed that it was a little hammer poll(butt) heavy. It could be bad technique but I noticed that when the hawk hit the wood I was chopping it would tend to twist in my hand. It no longer does this with the slight forward weight to it.
