Hey guys. Recently I have been looking into the Cold Steel San Mai III recon tanto. I did some researching but the only information I could find on it was from Cold Steel. Does anyone own this blade or has had any experiences with it?
If this knife isn't great do you guys know of any good tanto knife around the $100 range?

Knives often are better at some things than others.
What are you wanting this knife to be good at?

I don't care for tanto blades. I've never found them useful for the things I need a knife to do. Not real good for skinning. Not much as an outdoors tool. I suppose it works for self defense if that's your thing.

As for the knife in question, I've never held one so I can't comment about the balance or the grip.

The VG1 San Mai III holds an edge fairly well (at least as well as 440C, Dennis Strickland found it to be similar in edge retention to VG10) and it's pretty tough stuff, tougher than non-laminated VG10.

Not sure if I know any good tanto knives in any price range.

I agree with knarfeng, I find the Americanized tanto style limited in functionality.

They are good for cardboard box cutting/opening!

I plan on using it for a military combat knife. I need something that can be used for throwing (if i ever need it for that), cqc, and some basic tasks. I don't really need a hunting knife or a survival knife I just need something that will be balanced, tough, and mean in combat.
