Cold Steel sheaths query

I am toying with the idea of buying a Master Hunter or a SRK. Apparently the MH has a Concealex sheath whereas the SRK has a Securex sheath. Are these the same material? Is it another word for Kydex? Has anybody had experience with these sheaths? Do they retain the knife? I would be using it in the woods of SW BC where it gets dampish at times.

CS's newer Concealex/Securex sheaths are light years ahead of their crappy leather ones-I have an older Trailmaster Bowie circa 1999/2000-great knife(except for the rather awkward guard-to handle geometry-BUT very cheap black leather sheath.Fortuneately there is a forum member named "Normark" who makes custom/semi-custom kydex sheaths for all manner of knives and he is in Harrow ,Ont.For once we don't have to send stuff across the border-with all of its hassles. :) :)

Hey Guys..

First off..

Stickbait..
Thank you very much for the plug....Appreciated

I'll try to explain the Concealex/Securex thing...
I believe this is correct,, however it's third party, this is the way it was told to me,so who knows...

Concealex the trademark was owned by someone that worked for Bade-tech (Victor I believe). When he stopped working there,,or shortly after that they stopped using the Concealex name..I believe thats where the Securex name came from, as blade-tech does or use to do Cold Steel's sheaths..

Basically though it's probably the exact same stuff...

I still use the name Concealex,, mostly to avoid confusing the consumer, as it is a Very well known product(Brand Name) as is Kydex...

As for their sheaths.....

I have a couple of them,, and from what I can remember they are still using retaining straps and the sheath shapes are very generic, and ambi.. Retention is well,,lets say,, you'll be glad you have a strap on them...

Feel free to have a look at my "Products" page,, a have a fairly wide range of blades..

Feel free to drop me a note if you have any questions...

Thanks for the info, guys. The CS website shows the sheaths as having a strap around the top of the grip. And it appears that the sheaths place the sharp edge to the rear if worn on one's right side. I insist on a retaining strap but CS places the straps fairly high on the grip. I don't think this is a good idea because the knife could slide up thus exposing the sharp edge of the blade which I might accidently grab. I prefer the strap to be next to the guard thus keeping the knife completely in the sheath.

Two restraining devices can be even better. I have an old Puma Bowie that has a strap over the guard as well as a thong that passes through a hole in the grip. Excellent idea.

I believe that the importance of sheaths is often overlooked by knife manufacturers.

Hey Joe...

The retaining strap is near useless..

Try one of my sheaths and you'll see there is no need for a strap,, unless you are jumping out of planes or off the back of trucks..This knife will Not fall out..

Tell you what..
Shoot me your address, I'll send you one,, try it for 30 days,, then pop it in the mail, I'll even pay the return postage....... Think of it as a passaround of sorts....

Once you've had a good sheath on your belt,, you'll never look back,,and you'll never look at another OEM sheath the same way...

I'll stake my reputation on that..

Can't beat an offer like that...

Normark:
Gosh, that offer is tough to beat. I just might have to take you up on it. But first I have to decide which knife to get. That could take me a while.
What holds the knife securely in your sheaths? Friction?

Hey Joe C...

Not a bad offer Eh..Take me up on it for sure....:)
Just tell me which knife you get...

The soldier in the below picture carried his CS SRK in one of my sheaths for a tour in Iraq.. No problem, sheath is still working as it was designed to.

Yes the sheath is friction fit to the handle of the knife, not the blade.

I'll be awaiting your email..:)

my .02, I have used one of Normarks SRK sheaths for almost two years and find it flexible tucked in and sturdy on the belt, and very secure. And cool looks too.
cheers
