I noticed the CS website, both coldsteel.com and ltspecpro.com lists the Urban Pal as 420 steel, but their catalog and recent flyer lists it as AUS-8a.
Anybody know which is steel is the accurate, correct one?

I'm pretty sure it's AUS8. That's what they use for most of their stuff.

I believe they used to be made of 420j2, then discontinued, and brought back as AUS-8. Can't remember where I heard that from, but it sounds familiar.

Sounds good, thank you. I was concerned that pehaps dealers operating in haste were just slamming the AUS 8 label on all their CS knife descriptions, not taking into account that some of the knives are 420J2.

LOL!

So I called Cold Steel and asked them the same question, 'which steel do you use in your Urban Pal (and Super Edge) and how does one tell?"

The woman on the phone first replied 'Does it really matter?" Well, yeah, to me it does. I think of one steel as being better than another, and if it didn't matter we could all just buy Pakistani eBay blades for $3.99.

She told me to hold on, she'd check with the warehouse. After a couple of minutes she came back and told me " I checked with the warehouse, they're very busy, and he said they've always been AUS 8."

When I politely told her that their own Cold Steel website, and their own ltspecpro.com site, as well as high-volume dealers like Knifecenter and Amazon all list these knives as 420, she acted surpised, and said she'd have to tell her people to correct that.

I'm not holding my breath.

What is it about California knife companies (remember M_____ Knives) that they play 'Guess what our blade steel is' regardless of what they advertise it as, and then act like they're doing you a favor to tell you..... the truth?

Amazing.
