I see that SMKW has the C.S. Trailmaster in the SK-5 steel for 50$. I have an old one in Carbon-V. Does anyone have any experience with these and how would it compare to the old ones.--thanx -KV

Considering that Cold Steel is discontinuing that model and is coming out with a higher-priced satin finished model instead, it's definitely worth $50 just to get one of the old ones and use it.
Just wish I could have got one of the Recon Scouts from SMKW at $40 before they were all gone...

Cheers,
Mike

I have had no problems with the SK5. Get one, at that price especially, I'm sure you won't regret it.

I have an SK-5 Laredo Bowie, and I'm very happy with it. Even after heavy chopping the blade can be brought back to a razor's edge with minimal effort. The tip deformed (to one side) when I dropped it in the floor - should have known better with such a heavy knife - but even that was more easily repairable than I would have guessed at the time.
I've never used the old Carbon V, but I understand the only reason Cold Steel started using SK-5 instead was because something happened with their supplier and they could no longer get Carbon V in an economically viable way.
While it's still a great steel, I believe SK-5 is reputedly a step down. Carbon V was about equivalent to 1095, while SK-5, according to their website, is more on par with 1055.

SK-5 is the Japanese equivalent of 1080. Carbon V was a modified 0170-6C.
I have the now dicontinued SK-5 Trailmaster. You will not notice much of a diffirence between SK-5 and Carbon V

Seems I'm too late! They're out of stock.
I guess it's just as well...I already have one and I guess I don't "need" another.

Of couse if we all thought that way this forum wouldn't exist.

There are a couple Trailmasters and Recon Scouts on eBay going for the same as SMKW's price. Better hurry if you want one.
