Cold Steel Slippies?

Hi,

I've just come across a couple of Cold Steel slip-joint knives, a Bird Hunter, and a medium Stockman. Like many things about knives, I didn't even know CS made such things. I always assumed they just made fixed blades and other such folding knives that don't particularly interest me.

Can any of you enlighten me about them as to quality and where did they come from? Other patterns they sold? Anybody own one?

Sooo much to learn about this hobby! I'm never going to be as savvy as you guys!

Thanks,
dalee

A few years ago there were four CS slipjoints made by Camillus. A stockman, trapper, muskrat and folding hunter.

The knives were nice and the blades were of good quality (Carbon V) but the faux black jigged bone (delrin) left something to be desired in terms of looks and feel.

If these are new production they are obviously made under contract by another manufacturer as CS doesn't make these (and Camillus, obviously, is defunct).

I believe that they were made for Cold Steel by Camillus. I bought a large trapper when they were being closed out and it is a good knife. Good fit and finish, and the carbon steel blades on mine take an edge and hold it as well as any of my Case or Boker carbon slipjoints.

Edit: Beaten to the punch by Blues, but I actually like the black delrin on these more than the yellow delrin on my Case knives. :)

Five. There was a single blade Bullet pattern, essentially the Queen Mountain Man. Extra rare, but I have witnessed several on a certain auction site.

Thanks for the correction, I don't remember that one and I no longer have any of the four I originally had as they've been sent to some friends around the country.

I thought they never ended up making the bullet knife. It was up on the site for a while then taken out. But did they ever sell that knife?

Here are a couple of quick shots of the CS folding hunter. This was one of those that Blues sent out around the country. (Thanks again, E). Notice that this one has had the original fake bone, black derlin handle replaced with some red jigged bone. Probably 5 1/4 closed and almost 9 1/2 open. A big, heavy, solid knife. Sorry about the indoor picture but we got the first cold snap in the Texas Hill Country and I am to much of a wuss to go outside to take a better picture.:D

Yes, there are 3 on Ebay right now, the first ones I have seen on there in years, all from the same seller.

Do a search for "Ozark" and you will find them.

A search for the Ozark Hunter is what brought me to Bladeforums. I had read about it in TK, many many years ago. Picked up the stockman, I thought I got another model too. Anyway, great knives for working, not bad fit and finish. Nothing too flashy. Bearclaw had pointed me in the direction of an auction for the Ozark Hunter, on another forum, but I never picked one up. The owner of Country Knives told me that Cold Steel kept promising they were going to ship, but he said they were never put into production. Anyway, I got a Queen Mountain Man instead (seen in an issue of TK also), and subsequently got a Remington bullet knife from Camillus, made in the 90's. Both of those are long gone, and now, after seeing one from the 80's, I saw an original from the 30's, and really want one of those. I want to get a used truck too, so I think I am not going to be getting an older Remington anytime soon. I've never handled an Ozark Hunter, but I would recommend the Mountain Man or Camillus made Remington bullet knives.

Now that I think about it, I think I saw one at a show earlier this year, but had no interest in getting one, I had the Remington at the time.

I have the medium stockman. Good working knife with nice blades. The Carbon V steel Camillus used takes a crazy sharp edge, the sharpest out of my slippies.

I have the Muskrat. Fit and finish are good, though as mentioned the black plastic scales are less than elegant. Everything opens and shuts nicely and the blades are super sharp. I have owned it for quite a few years but haven't really used the knife much so can't say a lot about its performance. I like mine and would recommend them if you can get one for a reasonable price. As others have said, the maker was Camillus.

I've got their stockmans and trappers. I think they are the best fit in my hand, with the possible exception of the Queen large stockman (not the Cattle King). They take a great edge, and hold it much longer than most, IMO. They are my favorites with the Queens a close second. The Carbon V takes a very nice patina also.
