I'm looking for any input on my choice of a knife ofr my son. He graduates as a USAF Pararescueman next April, and I want to get him a Cold Steel SOG Bowie, or a SOG Tech Bowie as a graduation present. They are essentially the same syle of knife, the Cold steel is made of Krupp 6114 Stainless, and the SOG is AUS 8. I imagine the SOG is a better knife, but I'm looking for something that is functional, not fancy.Any input as to the relative merits of each knife?

I think I would go with the SOG. They've been doing that type of knife for a long time. Check out there forum under Manufacturers. I think it would be a better looking knife but performance wise I doubt there would be a lot of difference.

By the way welcome to BladeForums!

I would go with the SOG too. Better steel in my opinion.

Still, $100+ is a lot of money for a knife with mid range steel, which AUS8 is. I believe a Fallkniven A1 will cost you about the same, and it's a very high end knife, with superior steel (VG10).

I would take the SOG over the coldsteel anyday, however I much prefer the SOG Trident fixed blade over the Sog Tech bowie. It has a much better handle. Apart from that it is pretty much the same (it may come with a better sheath also, not sure). Once thing you might want to look at is an Entrek Force Recon. Fantastic knife made in the USA with 440c steel. It does have a partially sharpened spine though.

I have the cold steel SOG knife in Carbon V and it is an ok knife. The version in Krupp is discontinued I believe; I have had other Krupp bladed knives from CS and they have not held an edge worth crap. I wouldn't recommend them.

I do not have the specific SOG knife although I do have several other versions of the SOG bowie in AUS 8 and I have been impressed with them and I would feel comfortable with one.
