Cold Steel - sorry if this is a stupid question

Hi All,
thanks for all the advice on buying a new knife. I ordered the KaBar JohnEk model 5 just because I have the model 4, but ordering the workhorse blade is on hold. I have a question about Cold Steel. I already have a CS Tiger Claw which is awesome, but have been reading/watching many reviews that the CS fixed blade sheaths damage the edge of knives they are supposed to protect. is there any truth in this ? Spending £3-£400 on a knife only to find its sheath keeps wrecking the edge would be annoying to say the least.
thanks.

Some folks have reported dulling of the edge due to the material used in the CS Secure-Ex sheaths.
Others folks have reported never experiencing dulling. There is also a report that Cold Steel addressed this issue.
So clearly this widely discussed dulling issue is not absolute.

I think I have noticed this issue with a SOG knife but not a cold steel.

I just ran my knife against the outside of my sheath. And it cut a reasonable little groove in it. I don't think cold steel do that hard a plastic.

This is interesting. According to random internet guy. Sort of.

If all you did was pull the knife out of the sheath a hundred times the knife does get a bit duller.

But if say you were using that knife the hundred times. You would have had that issue anyway.

Didn't that come with a Secure-Ex ? Have you had any problem with that yet ?

Actually , IIRC , that karambit curvature makes it a bit challenging to draw or sheath properly .

You have to use a kind of circular motion to follow the blade shape , while keeping the spine against the sheath .

Still , I don't recall a dulling problem with mine . 🤷‍♂️

Oops ! My bad .
Tiger Claw" is a folder , so no sheath . I was thinking of the "Steel Tiger" !

I bought a Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto a couple years ago. The secure-ex sheath it came with was horrible. Very difficult to withdraw the blade and when I did, it was obvious that the sheath was going to dull it. I had a custom sheath made and am very pleased with it. Hopefully they have correct this problem.

It probably depends on which model of knife as well as individual knives and sheaths.

I'd also suspect it would be an issue of the "secure-ex" and similar materials which are common with other companies as well.

They can sell the knives for less if they use cheaper materials than leather or kydex, and people who care about it would likely get custom sheaths anyway.

I have noticed the newer Recon Tanto I replaced my old one with maybe a year and a half ago dulls faster than my old one, and part of it could be the secure-ex vs leather, but it could also be SK5 vs Carbon V, the heat treat used by Camillus vs the one used in the Taiwan factory, the grinds on each knife, or what I'm cutting.

I have a bunch of these sheaths easily 30 of them without exaggerating and about 10% of them touch the edge regardless of how you put knife in or pull out, and dull instantly.

I believe it's due to the models. meaning different steel same models are slightly different dimensions. the sheaths are all built the same. e.g. a srk sheath is used for all srk knives. some srk are sk-5 some san mai, some 3v etc. if you compare the knives they are close in dimensions but are different enough. hence why the sheath doesn't fit right. could also be whoever sharpened it left a bit more edge length..ive seen this too in same models.

I dont have that model you're asking about op.....so maybe it won't have that issue with it even a 10% in my unscientific statistics from my personal experiences with the sheaths....

a Kabar order was on hold, but why there is concern about the sheath of Cold Stee?

a custom made sheath out of milk box (Tetra Pak material) could give you some peace of mind
