Cold Steel Spartan Custom Scales??

Really like my CS Spartan, and appreciate it as being a very rugged and utilitarian folder. But the handles have always felt--to me--very cheap in the hand. I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who makes custom scales for the Spartan. I'd really like to pull this knife out of storage and actually use it some day.

Thanks....

Type into google custom scales. You’ll see a website with the word G10 in IT. I had some scales made and they are freaking awesome . Take a couple weeks to come in but worth every penny!!!! Hope this helps.

Hi, I posted an almost identical request yesterday and got this great response which I'm gonna go with

[QUOTE="Grimp2001, post: 18043338, member: 490602" I'd try it myself but I doubt I'd get the finish I want! Thanks[/QUOTE]

You will never know unless you try. Do some research, to learn what it takes. Practice on some cheep knives. (Something like Ontario's Old hickory line of kitchen knives.)Then go for it. You will probably impress yourself and all your friends too.

Good luck, but I have neither the time nor the inclination, and wouldn't know where to start.

Like the saying goes, "A man's GOT to know his limitations."

p.s. And, to be clear, I don't want to just change the finish on my scales. I want something of an entirely different material, since the hybrid-nylon CS uses just doesn't appeal to me.

This is Suingab’s email. Try shooting him an email. This is the scale he made me.

The Spartan is tricky because it uses nested liners. So most likely a custom maker would ditch the liners and just use G-10.

Good point. Actually, the Spartan in G-10 sounds perfect.

I think there would be substantial demand if someone were able to CNC G-10 scales for the Spartan. Perhaps try contacting @BOOMER52 on the board. Nested liners would be no problem for him. He makes a lot of scales for the Spyderco Delica and Endura.

This is like putting a fart can exhaust on a Civic.

I dunno. They're pretty well made. Steel is CTS-BD1 now switching to AUS10A. I had one years ago and gave it to a friend because it's an anchor in the pocket. Puts a smile on his face. It's a beast.
But yeah the scales would cost more than the knife.

FWIW - as a maker of custom scales for many blades....you are gonna be hard pressed to find someone to take the time to make these at a reasonable price (if at all). Between the nested liners, and some other milled pockets for the back lock it would take several hours of CNC programming, or a crap ton of manual milling....in both cases likely costing more than the knife itself. This is the main reason you don't see a lot of guys taking jobs on low end folders anymore....

Plus, there is not a lot of demand for customizing cold steel knives....I've done 2 in the past 5 years. They are well made value folders, but not good for customizing.

It's been a while since I bought the Spartan, so I just went back to their website to check on its current price. $129.99

Call me crazy, but I think paying that much again for a custom handle that...in my opinion...would completely change the look and feel of the knife would be well worth it. I suppose this is an opinion held by exactly one person, but so be it. It's a durable, tough-looking, rather unique knife that has great hand feel...to me, it's worth the upgrade.

For at least twice the money I would look to another knife
