The Cold Steel Spartan seems to be a very overlooked top quality, low price, 7.5 oz overbuilt large folder. Handle is 6 inches and overall length is 10 1/2 inches.
Price is in the $56 - $60 range and this case is the exception to the rule you get what you pay for.

The Spartan gives you much more than what you pay for.

The blade is Japanese made AUS8 (this is not super duper steel but it is good steel in fact it's very good) a large, wide 4 1/2" long and 4mm thick. I would think those who say Cold Steel does a worse job at heat treating their AUS8 steel either do not know what they are talking about or are lying because they hold a grudge against Cold Steel's president.

The handle is a thick stiff Zytel like material (CS calls it grivory) that is FULLY LINED top to bottom inside with hardened stainless steel. This handle does not flex when I squeeze it as hard as I can .

It utilizes Andrew Demko's triad lock which has been tested to withstand about 600 pounds of force. The knife itself is another Andrew Demko design. Fit is excellent no play at all in any direction. Opening is smooth and large phosphor bronze washers are used to make this possible.

The finish on this knife is another story and well for lack of a better word quite Spartan. It's rough black grooved handle, bead blasted blade and hardware make for a subdued non glare finish which is far from pretty.

The size of this knife is just about small enough to carry in your pocket just a tiny bit larger and it would be too big for pocket carry.

This knife dwarfs the Spyderco Manix in size and is even bigger than the Zero Tolerance 300 series.

Despite the large size of this folder the grip is just adequate for my medium sized hands if you have extra large hands or long fingers you may find your fingers touching your palms quite a bit. Despite this fact the Kopi grip design would make dislodging your grip quite a task and the knife grip should remain quite secure if you were to forward thrust or pound with the pommel.

Lets make this clear from the start you will not get any brownie points at all from sheeple with this thing it is a large vicious folder both in looks and depending on the situation (work or SD) function as well. I would hate to be on the receiving end of this thing in a life death situation.

To wrap it up as far as lock strength, durability, and reliability I am sorry but this thing will easily out do the above mentioned folders (which I also happen to like very much) as well as most others for what it is and that is a top quality low priced large dependable folder.

Despite to above I would not recommend using this as a pry bar.

Good read, greater.., I think all of the production companies are stepping up to the plate on quality because the market has become loudly demanding for it. I would like to agree with you on AUS8, I think it is a very good steel especially for the price range it generally dwells in. I have had tremendously good experiences with the steel. I am not a Cold Steel Basher (or any other company for that matter) but the negative needs to be aired as well as the positive. All of my CS knives have performed fine for me, no complaints and no regrets.

Nice post. :)

All my CS knives have been great, and I have a bunch of them. :D

I like some of the Cold Steel knives and have a couple. But I do not see the Spartan easily outdoing the Spyderco Manix, or the ZT0300 series, unless you are talking about blade length and overall length.

I just recommended this to one of my friends yesterday. Amazing knife for the price range.

got pictures? :) the boker burke might be a match! although the spartan might be longer overall. without having a scale i believe the burke is heavier. :) the thing that stops me from getting a spartan, is i don't care for backlocks. but thats just me. :D

There are a lot of great Cold Steel folders that are bargains for the average working man. One of my favorites is the Ultimate Hunter. I have not checked out the Spartan though. I did just get the Christmas special flyer from CS the other day. Snagged me one of their swords in the way of the Naval Dirk that I've wanted for a while now. Not sure why I wanted it. I mean its not like I'll carry it,:D but the price was pretty decent and I have always liked that one.

May have to look in and see that Spartan folder now that I know about it.

I'll second that Ultimate Hunter. It is the best design and strongest knife of it's kind that I have seen. Cold Steel knives are 'working men's' knives and I have yet to get a dud knife from CS.

Cold Steels pretty great really! I'm not much on the spartan but just because it looks a tad odd too me! it is a good hd knife for the average joe though ZT's are better but then they should be they cost lots more!

There are a lot better thats true but one thing is true about Cold Steel knives for the most part and that is that they simply work. The guys that say otherwise or that they are crap usually say more bad about the owner forgetting to judge the knife as it is. What I mean is to look at it as if there was no ID of any kind on the knife. Doing it this way judging the knife only as if you had no idea where it was made or by whom you can then look at it objectively without bias or opinion based on your emotions.

Most of the knives Lynn approves for the catalog are tough and hold up well and 99 % of the time they come super sharp ready to get after it. There are other knives made by other companies surrounded by just as much hype in the advertisements for their products, owned by people just as questionable as CS's Lynn Thompson and I always kind of chuckle when the fans of those companies or owners start pointing out all the flaws with CS and the owner not realizing the very knives they carry and the people they like are really no different from that stand point. In the end all that nonsense has nothing to do with whether the knife actually does what its supposed to do and stands up to the test of time and use. Most folks that have owned a CS Voyager, Vaquero, Ultimate Hunter and many more of their knives including many of their fixed blades know full well they actually are just as tough as many knives four times the price. Like anything there are some that break and usually that one knife that gave someone a surprise is then used to judge them all. Thats not an accurate or fair way to judge a knife line.

Say what you want about LT he makes one of the best mid locking folders on the market. I've had them apart and compared them to the supposed best and most expensive and other knives in the same price point from competitor companies and Cold Steel knives usually stand out supreme for actual lock up contact, beefy build, strength and reliability. I've hung some free hanging weight on some of the Cold Steel liner locks in the past and was quite shocked at how strong they were also. Their Peerless leaf lock is actually quite good.

Am I a fan of CS? Not anymore than any other company. I just happen to look at the knives and judge them for the knife regardless of my feelings or thoughts on the people behind them.

Demko's stuff are pure winners.

I'm very lucky in that I have a beautiful wife who not only supports my knife hobby, but just got me TWO CS Espadas (XL and L) for our 10 year anniversary.

Those espadas are the best folders I've held/owned/used bar none.

Demko is the man.

I carried a L Espada for several months... and loved it. The father in law carries my Pocket Bushman and also loves it.

wait till you see the 2010 stuff!

CM:

The espadas are, IMHO, are the finest double duty folders I've ever owned. I haven't tested them hard, but no need for that. Those youtube videos speak for themselves.

They draw fast, multiple handle grips that change mechanics/leverage, they are discreet in the pocket, strong handle materials, wave feature, flawless lock that you have to INTENTIONALLY depress DEEP for it to disengage...and ridiculously razor sharp...

And I personally am in disbelief that these knives can do all that chopping on those youtube videos. It's absurd really. Impressively absurd.

Yep, the Demko designs are winners. I'm looking at the Spartan and Rajah's right now.

I would LOVE to see a Demko/Emerson collaberation.

I think the American Lawman is the steel for the money. You get that great lock and at a bargain price anyone can afford. That mini is a great model for 50 state carry too. Even legal in Chicago.

Andy I just watched your video on youtube after tracking it down. I don't believe I've seen a better performance for a folding lock for reliability and strength. Pretty impressive stuff. As if the whacking was not impressive enough on their own but to then hang 658 pounds on it after all that beating is one of those things that if I had not seen it for myself I'd have been thinking it was just pure BS.
