Cold Steel Spartan mod suggestions...

I am curious about mods people have done to the Spartan to improve it's performance and functionality.

After reading a bunch of things on the Spartan I now realize what happened to cause it to go spinning out of my grip while I was practicing waving it (resulting in a pretty bad cut). I believe the wave plate got snagged on the edge of my jeans. This had happened a few times before but, on those occasions, all that happened was the knife didn't deploy or I dropped it (prompting my post asking about lanyards). I saw one youtube video where a guy claimed that rounding off the back corners of the wave plate kept it from snagging. Has anyone else found this to be true or, if not, does anyone have any other suggestions on how to improve this issue?

Also I find the knife almost impossible to open one handed (I think this is the most significant drawback in the knife). It's very new and VERY stiff. The lock release requires a lot of force as well. Anyone have any thoughts on how to "loosen" things up a bit?

Any other ideas/mods would be much appreciated.

I've owned my Spartan since november and I've never had a problem with it not deploying or a wave failure ending in injury the stiffness however doesn't seem to loosen much which I happen to like. It will tear up your pants after a while though unless you round the back edges of the plate like you said.

Just to clarify, I don't think the wave feature is going to cause injury (99.9% of the time). What is does do, on occasion, is to snag on the edge of the pocket (a well documented issue reported by many). It just so happened that, on one of these occasions (when it snagged), I was pulling with a fair bit of authority and lost my grip. The momentum of the knife spun it out my pocket catching my hand. It's the propensity to snag that is the problem, not the propensity to injure. In other words I'm not concerned that I'll get injured again, I'm concerned that I can't count on the reliability of wave feature.

No wave feature is 100% effective.
None.
Not Emerson's, Spyderco's, or Cold Steel's.
You can get rather consistent, but not 100%.

Good point. I was wondering about whether the Emerson might be better. The guy from knives town actually claims the Cold Steel wave plate works the best.

BTW I was looking for more consistency from my Spartan because you don't really have any other good options if the wave fails. It doesn't open easily with one hand and flicking it open needs to be done just right (because the lock is so stiff on mine anyway).

For me I found the wave on the Spyderco Endura Wave to be the best.
But the wave on my Emerson Combat Karambit is a close second.
Each person will likely have their own preference. I say try them out in person if you get a chance.:)

Actually, I'm getting Andrew to do some mods on the Spartan as we speak. If these don't work out I'll be getting an Emerson Super CQC8. I'd just get a real kick out of it if I can get what I'm after in the Spartan. I love stuff that has no "status" value but is killer functional. You find examples of this in all walks of life. It's true that you don't get something for nothing and that you have to pay for quality, but paying more doesn't necessarily guarantee quality. Sound systems a very good example. I spent tens of thousands on "high end" audiophile equipment before discovering professional studio equipment that outperformed it (by a large margin) at 1/4 the price.

BTW you won't find any high end "audiophile" magazines or reviewers ever talking about this pro gear because it would put the entire "high end" audio industry out of business if the average music lover knew about it.
