Hey all,

Got a new WIP thread for wood scales I will be making to fit a Cold Steel Spartan.

Now, I just received the blade and out of the box I was stunned at how big this knife is! After starting to dissasemble the knife I found it is a quality made knife! The only thing that really detracts from the quality of the liners, blade and internal mechanisms is the plastic scales. It might just be me but the scales really make the knife feel cheaper than it actually is. That being said I am looking forward to seeing the wood scales on this beast of a knife! I think the wood scales will enhance the feel of the knife.

Give Away:
Like my Spyderco Watu WIP thread, I will be offering a giveaway on this WIP thread for a set of custom Cold Steel Spartan wood scales ($140 value). To enter: Subscribe to my newsletter on www.trifectcustom.shop and comment down below! You must subscribe and comment to be entered before 09/31/2020, winner will be announced on 10/01/2020. Good luck!

UPDATE: 09/09/2020
Got the templates made and cut the pocket for the nested liners. It's a bit tight so I'm gonna adjust the programming and get it to open up just a bit more. The profile is spot on though! 20200908_161607_resize_92.jpg 20200908_172006_resize_91.jpg 20200908_171903_resize_48.jpg

Milled out the first blanks, they were too thick so I programmed a nice easy radius over the top of the scales. The radius really improved the overall look and feel of the scales. I had too tight of a radius at first, (you can see the indexing pin is proud of the scales in the pic), but I gave it a bigger radius and now its perfect! I still haven't decided on the wood for the giveaway but I am kind of leaning towards Bocote, as I think the yellow striping would look great with the blade. 20200909_161700_resize_25.jpg 20200909_161714_resize_99.jpg 20200909_181234_resize_39.jpg

I don't own a spartan to put wood scales on. I have two of the G10 recon1 without liners. And an old recon 1 with the ultra lock and plastic scales. It has held up well over the two decades I've used it.

It will be interesting to see what wood you choose for thw scales!

I'm still deciding on the wood for the giveaway, I think this knife would look cool in most darker woods, but as of right now that's about all I know!

Post too over at the Cold Steel forum! Folks will be glad to see that. Can’t wait for the finished product.

I also suggest scales for AD-10, Recon 1, and the Lawman. I see several guys rocking those knives.

Will do! I will look into those other models. Thanks for the tip :)

Agreed, I think Walnut will be a definite winner. The darker toned woods will look nice, I'm also thinking Wenge would look fabulous
Wenge is a good choice also.
It has been a while but in my 20’s I worked in a cabinet shop and we did a lot of nice custom work so I got to work with a lot of exotic hardwoods.

Some of these are quite beautiful but I came to appreciate the more plentiful woods like cherry, walnut, and maple when I do projects nowadays.

Actually ebony may be a nice one for the Spartan scales.
I am partial to the streaky ebony with a bit of contrast in the grain.

Oh nice, I have worked with a bunch if exotics as well and I do still appreciate the domestic woods. Especially walnut, my first guitar I built was a walnut guitar!

I've got some Macassar Ebony that I could do a set out of. I think you're on to something there! Screenshot_20200904-144409_Gallery_resize_58.jpg

that ebony would look amazing on any knife!

I’m a long time watch collector/restorer/fiddler and one thing that got me into knives (albeit recently) is the ability to breakdown and customize your own......

Those look great. Can't wait to see the finished product. How do you cut out the shape of the scales?

Really cool. I love that Spartan, and I agree those handles feel pretty lame. Good project!!

Update: Got the scales fitted, sanded and oiled! Sorry for the delay on the announcement I've been catching up on orders. I will announce the winner today for the giveaway so good luck to all those who subscribed to the newsletter this month and commented on this post during September!
The winner will get these sweet Brazilian Cherry Spartan handles!
