I have one new in box and was reading that early models were made with AUS8 steel while later models were CTD BD1 steel. Is there a way to tell which steel is in a particular knife and when a Spartan was manufactured. Not that it makes much difference but I would like to know which I have. Knife is new in box. Thanks, David

How long have you had it? They only just switched to BD1 a few months ago so it is much more likely that you have an AUS-8 version. If you have an older model it may even have a bead-blasted finish as opposed to the more recent stone-washed version. If it is bead blasted (dull matte finish) it is AUS-8 for sure.

I would assume that the BD1 model will likely say something different on the box, but never having purchased one I couldn't tell you for sure. In the end I wouldn't worry about it, you aren't likely to notice much of a performance difference if any. They are very equivalent steels with some people preferring AUS-8 and others BD1

Also, most stores shelves are probably still stocked with the AUS-8 version so if you bought this blindly it is likely AUS-8. You would likely know if it was BD1 because this would have been emphasized.

When and where did you get the knife? (don't post a link)

Thanks guys for all this info. I almost hate to tell you but I won it. The original package had a price sticker of $57.50 and the box is marked 21S. I was informed that it had been sitting in someone's safe for a few years. It does look like it is a matte finish blade so probably is bead blasted. I would then assume it is AUS8. Dave

There was also a stonewashed version in Aus 8, last year. The new Spartan in this year's catalog has "CTS BD1" on the blade. They did the same with VG1 in years past. I have been unsuccessfully looking for the stonewashed Rajah 2 in Aus 8.

Yes, the grind is still a hollow grind. The main difference is the stone-washed finish.

Lots of the previous Aus-8A versions had the beadblasted finish, which made it very easy to rust.

The last year or so of the previous Aus-8A versions switched to stone-washed finish.

All of the FRN/Griv-Ex handled knives that have been upgraded to Carpenter CTS-BD1 blade steel are supposed to be marked with that steel on the right side (the back side of the knife if the knife "points" to the left) of the blade.

OK, thanks man !!!It would be awsome if there was a saber grind Spartan .......... inDestructible !!!
