Cold Steel Spike opinions?

I have been looking at the cold steel spike series for a while and am tempted to get one. I like the simple design, the sleek lines and the price. It seems the bowie one would be the most practical and universally useful blade shape.

Being Cold Steel, I am sure they are of decent quality, however, I notice the steel they are made of is 420. I have no experience with this steel, and looking around online, it seems rather mediocre. One site even said "common use is as liner material for folding knives" Not a good sign.

Does anyone own any of these knives, and how satisfied are you with them?

Also, are the blades too thick for its small size? I prefer thin blades, especially on small knives.

I have one. It's more of a novelty than anything else. I know they show you stabbing through cars and stuff on the commercials, but this is not a practical knife for anything useful. The handle is extremely skinny and too uncomfortable for any regular use and leads me to believe that use as a weapon would lead to slippage resulting in cuts to the user!

It's a nice, inexpensive display piece, so if you really want to get it, make sure it's only for that purpose.

Edit: Simultaneous post FTW!

dude, it cannot be categorized as a regular knife in the ordinary sense of the word.
by all accounts it would be considered a shank by definition.
it would also be customary to consider such items as immediately disposable after singular useage; that being the case, even 420 steel would be a real luxury steel in which case...

i like mine, its a good last ditch self defense tool in my opinion but only if you know a bit on blade fighting.

I had one for a while, and finally traded it away because it has no real use, except, as everyone else has said, as a ldk. I would think you could spend the $ on a lot of other knives that you will use.

I got the bowie last year and it came out of the box pretty dull, but it had a full flat grind on most of the blade (and I mean FULL flat grind, there is only one bevel) so I thought it sliced decently. Though, the metal is really soft(54-55RC, I think). Bent the tip a fair amount when I dropped it. As for the thickness, it looked close to a quarter of an inch. I don't know anything about the steel(RC was a guesstimate). Overall, I was disappointed.

It's a zero grind if you don't consider the swedge.

I had one long long long ago, very soft steel. I cut one plastic bottle with it and it gave huge roll to the edge. It's good for prison I suppose.

i have one, got it when they 1st came out, imho the handle is too slim to hold it well, with my size hands anyway, i dont care for them myself, i was suprised when i got the thing how slim the handle was, the pics i saw didnt do it justice lol, i dont know about the steel i've never really cut anything with mine other than envelopes.

It's not much good for any kind of regular normal cutting use.
Weapon only.

I've owned on of the triangular 'stickers' for over 10 years. It is not at all practical but might be useful for a last-resort knife.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Based on what you guys have said, I think I will pass on getting one. The soft steel, combined with the uncomfortable handle has turned me off. And I certainly don't need another display piece.

I suppose, as some have suggested, if I ever end up in jail, I will have my girl bake me a cake and smuggle the Spike inside of it to me! ;)
